CMU and Financial Aid

Well, after getting the thumbs down from a majority of my other schools (:(), I've put a lot more consideration into CMU. My biggest concern, however, is the price tag. Although my parents are probably able to pay full tuition, it would most likely be much less strenuous on their lives (and wallets) if I get some sort of FA. Is it possible to apply for CMU after the first year or even the first semester? Will I be able to get any FA if they see that I'm able to pay for my first year? Thanks

Probably not unless your FAFSA shows need. You may be able to get a paying research position.

O-BTW. Congrats for being 100% EFC. Your Parents must have done something correct to allow you to apply and then attend a school without regard to finances.

itstoomuch, they've been saving for my and my sister's college tuition for years now! But still, any FA would be better than none. But it is possible to apply for FA? The reason why I did not apply for FA is because my sister did not receive any when she applied for colleges, and I know times have changed, but I really didn't think it was too necessary.

It might be too late to apply for financial aid for FALL semester but you can definitely apply for Spring. They will consider your tax documents and EFC when deciding to give you aid.

Of course there are always loans and work study you can engage in as well as internships and research opportunities.

AcceptedAlready, does a work study opportunity come as a package with FA? Also, will internships or research opportunities go directly toward the payment of my tuition or would it be similar to having a job and paying separate (sorry if I'm not clear with this question). When is the deadline for FA for the Spring semester if I do attend? Also, if I am granted any scholarship or aid, do I need to reapply for this each year or each semester? Thanks!

Work study does come on FA but you can do those almost anytime. There are "student" jobs here and even in the city of Pittsburgh that you can engage in. I recently found out that a kid in my class was working at a restaurant just down the block!

Spring semester? That would be like next year around April. You need to apply for scholarship and aid each year but if nothing has changed they will give you the same aid.

I'm not sure if I was clear with one of my questions, but wouldn't applying for FA in April (for the Spring semester tuition) be late or are college tuitions normally paid near the end of a semester?

Basically you would apply for aid (around April of YOUR freshman year) so you can get it starting sophomore year.

College tuition is paid shortly after a semester starts.

Ahh.. I see, I thought it was possible to apply for FA after a single semester (in order to get appropriate--if any--aid for the very next semester, ie. Fall: No FA, Spring: FA granted.)
