I'm assuming it is too late to apply for FA, but I just wanted to make sure. If anyone knows if it is possible to still apply, that would be fantastic, thanks.

It is too late.

but you can qualify for Stafford, PLUS programs. Perhaps Pells also.

itstoomuch,

Are Stafford, PLUS, and Pells all CMU-specific? Thanks

P.S.- Are these loans or scholarships/"free" money?

Stafford is low interest gov subsidized loan.
PLUS is a bank loan--the one your parents take out..i think u dont ahve to repay until 6mo after you graduate
these are not cmu specific
pell--idk (grant, i think)

no offense, but it's kind of late in the game to be asking those very basic financial aid questions.

Since CMU is SO expensive, and perhaps you might qualify for significant financial aid money in the future, depending on yours or your family's income and asset levels, maybe it would be prudent to either take a year at a state school or CC, or perhaps defer your enrollment at CMU until next year, and meanwhile DON'T FORGET TO FILL OUT THE FAFSA AND APPLY FOR EVERY TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP IMAGINABLE when the time comes (which is way before mid April).

Sorry to be so blunt, but thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of dollars are at stake here.

Good luck.

Sorry for seeming careless about something so important, but I had to double check! When my sister applied for college several years ago, she also applied for FA but was granted absolutely nothing--and she will be done when I begin.

I was certain that the deadline for FA was long past, but I came across a webpage on CMU's website--that may or may not be outdated. It basically said that May 1st was the last day for FA applications, but now I assume that is only for transfers or returning students. Thanks for your time nonetheless.

P.S.- My parents are willing to pay full fare, and at the time of applications (several months ago) they told me that I should not stress about FA. However, I will apply for FA for my sophomore year.

7. If your sister applied for FA, Your sister may have misunderstood the terms of the aid package. Unless you are a nonresident or undocumented or have been involved in prohibited drugs, EVERYONE, is eligible of Stafford and PLUS loan programs. Your sister passed up loan programs as low as 2% vs 6.8% come July1. If your parents took the loan programs then instead of paying cash; Your parents could have more wealth with the debt, today, than without the student loans.

Let me further add, that FA comes in the form of scholarship, grants, workstudy, student loans, parent loans, subsidized loans. The loan programs are open for the coming academic year beginning 90 days before first attendence and up to Dec 31 of the current year. The FA package may not include any PLUS or private loans or unsubsidized Stafford programs-These are initiated by YOU and not by the school.

One of my rants is that many people (students) want to look at the trees but refuse to see the forest. Then sometimes they only see the forest and can't see that it is made of trees.

Can you figure out which category that this thread resides?

Thank you so much, itstoomuch.

My parents were originally going to withdraw stocks/investments in order to pay for tuition (as opposed to get a loan), but I told them about the loan program that you and others have mentioned in this thread and they would very much prefer those. I do, however, have a few questions:

Is there a maximum amount of money that is allowed to be taken out as a loan or does this depend on one's credit history?

May I have the official websites for these loan programs? Also, which one would you recommend? Which of these has the potential 2% interest rate? Thanks!!

Oh,

I actually found the Stafford Loan website and it clearly states the steps that I should take in order to be considered, however the very first step is to file a FAFSA. It is not too late to do this, correct? Also, it seems as though the first few steps are the same as apply for FA.

You will shortly get a FA package and information from CMU. Follow the YBR. In PA, www.aessuccess.com, (quasi state agency that is profit oriented) people will be the servicer of any FELP.

I assume that you have completed the FAFSA. If not, then git a move on. Like I said, everything is initiated by you, except receiving the info from the school. FYBR on CMU website.

Do Not file for FELP loans until after july 1 and be sure that you file the FA form for CMU. The Stafford form is ridiculoously simple and the PLUS form is the same as the Stafford form, except it says PLUS.

Good for you. We don't need to hold you hand anymore. Don't be impatient. Everything you need to know is on CMU's website.
