Daughter loved the UNCSA video (so did I). Thanks for posting it Milkshakespeare!

I don’t know Mommy5 – your post seems to confirm that conventionally pretty people are not a good fit for Purchase!

Acting Dad - I’m sorry you and your daughter were disappointed by CMU. I’m sure she was in their top sights as they indicated. Remember it often becomes an ensemble issue at the end. They may have needed less of her type than they originally thought…I know you know all this!
North Carolina is a great alternative… A true conservatory! And the weather is a thousand times better.
Still it will be a tough few days and I’m sorry for you both and all the disappointed kids out there!

My pleasure ;)

Group hug {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
ok so what thread can we hijack next ???

HA HA - I don’t know, mom2gals, but I’m ridin’ shotgun with ya!

Loved video… we know one guy on there… he went to the same HS as my S. What a surprise that was!

Thanks all. I think we do really need to do that parent get together. Maybe right after we send them off to school. I have a feeling this group would make for a fun party.

haha ActingDad! You maybe right. But maybe it’s not that Purchase doesn’t like the conventionally pretty… Maybe its that the conventionally pretty don’t like Purchase!

actually, I think Purchase seeks out a unique kind of student who is eclectic and creative in mind, look, and acting styles, and history may show when they deviate in choosing its class members, they don’t feel that they fit, thus creating a self fulfilling type.

Out of curiosity, I browsed back a few pages to see the video. I was surprised to see there was virtually no “acting” in it; lots of posing, laughing, running, etc, but nothing that a decent model couldn’t do. Anyone know what the video is used for? It doesn’t seem as though it would work to promote acting or musical theatre classes, unless, maybe, the background singing is by the students. It doesn’t in any way show what they can do on stage, though. Just a thought (I have no “skin in the game”–just a casual browser)

No the music isn’t CMU students-- the background music is by Imagine Dragons and it is called “It’s Time.” Seems like it’s just and introduction video to the students, putting a face with a name? And perhaps the video itself was done by students. It was nicely edited, good quality video. Very professional. I wondered, like you, what the video was for.

Annie43 that is an interesting observation. I bet it is just to give agents, CDs just a “taste” of who will be at the showcase. I’m sure all those kids are seriously talented and they will show what they can do at the showcase.

The difference between the CMU video and UNCSA is dramatic though. I stand by my initial comment that CMU looks for leading men and ladies. That is certainly not an insult. Who wouldn’t want to be Brad Pitt or Julia Roberts? I thought both videos were good. The UNCSA one tried to show each person’s individual persona, which is very hard to do in a few seconds, but I think it worked. One girl was more funny, quirky, one girl more conservative wholesome. That skater guy was cool, right? It was fun to watch.

ActingDad, I recall when your D began the whole post high school journey, she was set on not attending a college, but rather attending an acting conservatory. I think she has come full circle and that UNCSA is probably an ideal fit for her. She’ll earn a BFA but it is a true conservatory type experience with less academics. It is such a highly regarded program and so she’s done good! I’m sure CMU is a disappointment more because she knows the school better after having attended the summer program there. I am confident that once she gets to UNSCA, CMU will be a distant memory and it won’t matter at all to her at that point and she’ll be immersed in UNSCA and thriving and loving it. Maybe you can go visit again. To get into a second choice school and such a reputable program is a big achievement!

Ok, CMU’s Showcase video was beautiful, but I LOVED UNCSA’s so much more!! Very creative and quirky. :)

Milky, my D said she found you on facebook. That’s what I love about this career path, the kids who are all so vastly different can be so much the same in their passion, dedication, and drive.

I know it was a joke, MOMMY5, but I’m wondering if your comment about attractive people not choosing Purchase comes from some sense you have of the school.

I ask because my high school junior S visited Purchase with my H and wasn’t overly enthusiastic, although he thought the program was great. I’m just trying to get a better sense of the school, as it is a fantastic deal for NY residents, but I want my S to be happy.

Thanks Susan. I’m very happy with the results as I do agree its a perfect fit. If you go back to the original criteria we started with it nails on all points except she’d rather be in a bit more urban environment but that was never one of the most important criteria for her. We are going April 5 where she will sit in on classes at UNCSA and see a senior show. And you are right that it is knowing the school at CMU that plays into this.

Ugadog99 – You make a great point. I would bet that our two kids and Milky couldn’t be more different in many respects. Yet what they share in terms of a passion for theater trumps everything else.

GCmom – read mom2gals post (#149) – I think she did a pretty good job of describing. Its hard to put into words exactly what is they look for. What I do know for sure is that when we looked at and talked with the students at the on site audition, it was pretty clear to my daughter and I that she was not a fit. She did not even get an onsite call back. I’m sure she didn’t peform her material any differently than she did at UNCSA. It’s a dating game from both sides. It took us a while to fully get that even though pass ccer’s had told us that. It is still hard not to think about it has wanting to get an acceptance from every school.

Am I the only one here that is relieved that my child didn’t get an acceptance from CMU? Ha! Ha! Yes, I had those thoughts: It would be so cool! That would be amazing! That would be thrilling! That would be so fun! That would be so validating!

But the other part of me was saying: Please don’t call. How could we/she ever afford it?The debt! How could we say no? Please don’t call! Or: just tell her she’s on the priority wait-list. Then we can do high-fives and go out and celebrate with a dinner. We could afford the dinner.

:)

AND it’s in Pittsburgh! Blechk.

(I was born and raised in Cleveland.)

Jk. Maybe not. No, I am. Kinda.

Wow, I just watched the UNCSA Showcase and I want to see more, I loved it. How cool will it be when we know the kids in these showcase videos. I loved how we got to see something cool and idiosyncratic about each gradate. WOW!
