CMU Freshman Dorm?

Which Dorm should I be choosing as a Freshman?

I'll be an Engineering major.

Also, how does the roommate selection process work?

Depends what you want from your dorm.

Your major is irrelevant to picking your dorm, everything is close enough to make distance not an issue. (unless you want the rez on 5th)

They ask you 3 questions about your cleanliness/sleep schedule/social habits that aren’t detailed at all, and then pair you up with a person with similar answers. A lot of the time, your roommate is the same major as you.

Freshman dorm options include: Stever, Mudge, Morewood E-Tower, Donner, several houses on The Hill (Hamerschlag, Scobell, McGill, etc), and The Residence on Fifth (although this is rare for a freshman). Each dorm has its pros and cons, although it doesn’t really matter, since they’re all okay to live in. Where you end up, though, depends on when you send in your deposit and commit to CMU. The later you send in the deposit, the less chance you have of getting into Mudge (which fills up really fast, usually). To my knowledge, your major is irrelevant to your housing unless you are in special housing (for example, I am in special BXA/SHS housing, so I live almost exclusively with people in these programs).

As for roommate selection, you can specify someone you want to room with. Or, you can end up with someone you don’t know. CMU tries to match you up as best as it can with someone you’ll get along with based on a survey you take. It mostly just asks about how clean you like to keep your room, if you’re a night/morning person… it does a pretty good job of matching you up based on those factors. Just about everyone I know is matched up with someone with similar sleep time preferences or levels of messiness.

They only ask 3 questions? That doesn’t seem like very many in order to match someone up. We went to one school that asked about 60 questions!

Question - I was accepted with the Humanities Scholars Program. Do you know which dorm I will be assigned to? If you can, can you provide some information on this dorm? Unfortunately I never received the fat book or don’t have any other info (although I’m still deciding!)

CMU website tells me that Humanities Scholars housing is in Mudge. Mudge used to be a mansion and is one of the most desired freshman dorms on campus because most (if not all) of its rooms are primes of some sort. Big rooms, private bathrooms (shared between two rooms, I believe), and pretty close to campus–it’s in the same row of dorms as Morewood E-Tower and Stever. It does lack air conditioning, but this isn’t usually a problem, since it’s cold here more often than it is warm.

Also megan12–that may be so, but even so they did a pretty good job matching me up. My roommate and I get along fine, even if we’re not best friends, and the same goes for just about everyone else I know. My experiences may be skewed, though, since most of my friends and I live in BXA housing, so there’s established similarities between the people who live here.

You don’t need to befriend your roommate, just to live peacefully in the same room. I think my roommate is a poopy head but I remain civil and just ignore him most of the time.

uwaaaah - thanks!!
