CMU & Univ. of Porto MSc/MBA Program

I have been offered an admit to the aforementioned program

(here’s a link to a brief news story about the program)
ECE News: ECE Forms Partnership With Portuguese Business School

Today (i.e. 2 days later) I got the following details about the program,

· Program Details:
This is a dual degree program in which you will receive both an M.S. in ECE at Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from the University of Porto (2 degrees/2 diplomas). There is no difference in the degree requirements or the diploma that you will receive from both institutions.

· Curriculum:
The full-time MBA program (640 lecture hours, 75 ECTS – European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is fully run at the EGP-UPBS campus and further includes an international week delivered at a foreign business school. The MSc in ECE (96 units) corresponds to a total of 8 ECE courses (12 credit points each), with 6 courses run at the CMU campus and 2 courses run at FEUP (U.Porto). I’ve attached a tentative description of the coursework. Please keep in mind that while this gives you a general idea of the courses, this is a very new program and specific course offerings are subject to change. Also, please note that all courses are taught in English.

· Tuition/Financial Assistance:
Graduate tuition is the same while at the University of Porto and at CMU ($38,900 for the academic year). The program is self-funded, but you are welcome to explore financial aid opportunities while you are at CMU:

I'm an international student (India), and everything matters i.e. the reputation of the institute, the money involved, the job and education prospects etc. As for the offer, it includes portugal, so i'm a bit apprehensive, besides, they're also charging me the full CMU fee! (doesn't seem fair). Also, I am looking forward to a PhD after the Master's course, so there are a lot of questions in my head, and being a new program, there's not much data available anywhere.

How different could it be from the regular M.S. in ECE, am I losing out on any opportunity here? (Earlier, they did mention that I was not able to make it to the regular course, and then this came up)

Anyways, looking forward to your opinions and advice.

Thanks in advance

If you are considering getting a PhD degree after your master’s, you’d be better off with a research-oriented MS that included a research thesis requirement and the opportunity to publish papers at least at the international conference level. The program you mentioned strikes me mostly as a terminal, professional master’s degree based on coursework and with an added business component (more interesting then if you were looking for a position in industry right after graduation).
