I'm torn between these two choices. and I can't visit to decide..

I don't want to start one of those threads where people who favor one school over the other start an argument here, lol.

I'm just asking if people who are familiar with these schools, are attending these schools, etc can give me the pro/cons of each university.

btw, I got into Humanitites/social sciences at CMU and CAS for NYU

both undecided major, will probably switch schools since I have no clue what I want as a career yet..

Carnegie Mellon is one of the strongest and most impressive technical universities in the United States, with particular strengths with anything having to do with computers and software, software development, software use, and the like. Regardless of your major, you would have an opportunity to take advantage of this strength – both through coursework, and through the students you meet. CMU graduates with a technical bent do well in the job market. They are heavily recruited and they are present in all the high tech areas in the United States – as for example in the San Francisco Bay area, in the Boston route 128 area, etc.

NYU is less focused on technology. It is where many pre-med, pre-law, potential teachers, and many who end up in advertising, business consulting, etc go.

So CMU and NYU are very different schools as can be seen from who attends and where they end up career wise.

New York City and Pittsburg are very different cities. NYU draws many New Yorkers, whereas CMU has a more international student body.

They are both excellent universities. I would encourage you to make a stab at what you’ll do after university, what your major may be. My sense is that if you can take a step in this direction the decision will be clear, since the two universities are very different.

I don’t quite understand your last comment. It sounds like you’re saying that you’re likely to transfer after a year or two? I don’t think that this is a good plan going into a decision such as this.

Oh, I don’t intend to transfer to a different university. I’m just saying, since I’m currently so indecisive about my major, there is a high chance that I may switch schools within the university (for ex., CAS –> Stern )

I have to make the exact same decision as you. same exact scenario. same schools. except i’m from pittsburgh. CMU has better academics, hands down. It doesn’t compare. and it will present more of a true college experience. But New York is New York and NYU is still a great school. don’t feel bad i’m completely torn as well. When you decide and let me know. I’ve visited CMU a thousand time since it’s in my back yard, and I’m going to visit NYU this weekend, so i’ll let you know how that goest
