On the CO school of mines personal statement(optional), there is no word count for the personal statement that I could see. I submitted my application just yesterday, and my personal statement only had 156 words. Is that too short? I have no idea what the length is supposed to be; however, I thought it should be small because the box containing the personal statement is incredibly small. Someone today had told me it’s way too short. Any thoughts?
If your stats are strong it probably won’t matter at all.
Stats are
GPA: 4.39
ACT: 28
SAT (new 1600): 1290.
Hispanic/Latino…white
Since Mines is a reach, the essay might help. The length is less important than the content. Have a teacher or counselor review it.
Make sure you have some safeties on your list.
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology could be a safety for you and cheaper than Mines if you live in a WUE state.

What matters for Mines admissions is the MATHEMATICS classes, MATH grades and ACT MATH score. So the composite ACT does not matter much but they may have a cut off for composite score as well, I do not know. The math score will typically make or break an application to Mines in the past. Personal statement does not matter. Leave it out and focus on essays for schools that have time to read them. Mines has a small admissions staff and the essay will not affect the outcome. Mines does not bend on the math score. Even girls and Latino or black candidates will be rejected who have low math scores as the math score is the determining factor for success in the Mines coursework.
