Coaches contact before March 9

Hello, have people received any emails or other communications from coaches at schools in the TSAO since the application deadlines (Ten Schools Admissions Org. (Choate, Deerfield, Hill, Exeter, Andover, Hotchkiss, SPS, Lawrenceville, Loomis, Taft)? If so, please don’t name the schools, prefer not to stir up a hornets nest.

We understand coaches are supposed to refrain from contact with students before March 9. Perhaps they are allowed to respond in a very basic way to an inquiry, but cannot initiate? If a coach were to initiate at this late date, would that be considered a positive for the applicant?

Lastly, do people think some schools abide by the TSAO guidelines on coaches contacts even if it is not a member?

Thanks for the insights.

Humbly - I don’t know if that is true. The rules are set by the league in which the team plays - as far as I can tell - the only substantive rules have to do with merit and financial aid offers of support.

If they have seen HUDL and the SSAT, and they reach out, I’d give a big thumbs up.

My understanding, for schools we are applying to (ISL), was that between February 10 and March 10 coaches are not supposed to initiate contact but they can respond to anything you send them. Don’t know if that also applies to the TSAO.

@dogsmama1997 We actually received emails from 2 schools in ISL stating that this is the quiet period and schools cant reach out to students but can answer generic, non-specific questions.

@SportyPrep I would be very surprised if a coach broke this rule, very surprised. As I said the ISL coaches have the same rule. I don’t think that any schools who haven’t agreed to abide by the rule would feel the need to follow it (but my guess is that many of the major leagues have a similar rule).

@ReluctantDad We were told by coaches, and it has been our experience, that coaches can respond to whatever questions you send them during the blackout period. Questions don’t need to be “non-specific.”

My son had multiple reach outs during the quiet period. This was a TSAO school, and the coach also worked in admissions.

The email communications started in February and culminated with a call from the coach on M10. He was accepted at this school.

All other schools he was accepted at were radio silence.

So if your kid is getting communications now, I’d take that as a positive sign. Either that, or a coach who doesn’t know the rules.
