Hi, I'm a rising junior and I'm really interested in coaching my school's middle school math team. But I have no idea how i should start or approach it! My school was never really strong in math and all our practices were pretty much like math lessons, led by a teacher and i rmbr it being so boring (there isn't really an olympiad club either for high schoolers). SO if there's anyone out there with student led math teams in their schools, i would really appreciate it if you could tell me what the structure is like, what you guys generally focus on, etc!

if you are fun and energetic and have a 2100 on the SAT you have nothing to worry about.

Teach them to love math, not to do math. Teach them how to think, not how to get answers right. If middle schoolers are doing math team, then they have to like it, or they will likely quit. Model your teaching style after the math teacher you’ve had who, in your opinion, taught the most effectively. Yes, prepare for competitions, but do not teach as if that’s the purpose of math team.

I sort of coached the mathcounts team at my middle school. I taught them a few concepts and also showed them a few tricks, strategies, how to split the test, etc. Also wrote practice questions.

Teach them concepts that they are likely to use in the future, maybe you can make everyone bring $1 and have pizza, etc. I agree with @Flamewire
