Hey Darkdestroyer.
Thanks for that.

Darkdestroyer - I feel your pain - my son's stats are about the same with a 2330 SAT and didn't make it. Really they do owe it to you guys (who are all obviously super smart) to give you some feedback on how they choose. To kids who are used to pushing themselves and really succeeding - seems like a crap shoot!

I'll never drink coke again! I even received the leadership award of the year of my entire school!I don't understand how they choose their semifinalists! It's unfair for those with above or similar stats! Go Pepsi!

I think Coke scholarship checks family income. This scholarship is not strictly based on Merit. What income did you guys put on the app?

I don't think they check incomes because mine is low . but maybe they did "first come, first serve!". Do you remember what we had to submit to complete the app? sat, act, gpa, essays
recommendations? I don't remember sending school stuff.

laavieenchocolat - my son didn't remember submitting gpa or sat either - why don't they just call this a extracurricular scholarship - seems misleading

Yay I'm also a semi-finalist! Congrats to us all!
Wow, it's really annoying to have everyone with perfect stats complaining, you do realize that SAT scores aren't the most important thing, especially in a scholarship like this. There's no crazy formula to try to figure out how they chose the Semi-Finalists. I'm sure you will receive many other honors, as some of you have already listed.
Also, my SATs are <2000 and my community service <200 hrs. so they must have looked at everything holistically, not specifically one thing or another.

I agree with pnl09. Complaining about how you didn't make semifinalist and how stupid other people are who were selected, doesn't fix anything. But I understand that you want to vent (I am sure I would be doing the same thing). But if it gives you any insight into a possibility as to why I was selected, I have had a 20 hour a week job since Freshmen year, I have raised over $50,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and I was a founding member of a club at my school as well as an officer in several.

miltonmom- it IS an extracurricular and academic scholarship. In the materials on the website it says, "Rewards leadership and excellence as exemplified through academic achievement and extracurricular activities, including commitment to community service"

and darkdestroyer- I think being in top of the 98th percentile nationally for the SAT is pretty darn good so I would appreciate you not making it seem insignificant.

also, laavieenchocolat- It definitely wasn't first come first serve, I submitted my application the day before it was due (October 30). And it asked for my GPA, SAT scores, and if it did ask for income bracket that wouldn't factor into much because I wouldn't qualify.

rfwcphs1, I apologize if what I said earlier sounded insulting in any way. I was being shortsighted I guess and looked at SAT scores as the only criteria for the scholarship. Pnl09, I only chose SAT scores as a comparison of my status to that of others because they were probably the most direct, comparative measures out of all the possible stats.

Anyway, I think the scholarship system was based on quantity of activities or something, because I got rejected even though I did contribute hundreds of hours of extracurricular activities, it was only concentrated within a few activites (like five). Also, the app page that asked for people to fill in things like yearbook editor, yearbook photgrapher, newspaper editor, etc. is really dumb. Why dedicate an entire page to those specific activities when they can be listed on the extracurriculars list? To me, that just seems extraneous and appears as if though the scholarship people were only looking for a specific group or something. Also, my high school has newspaper, yearbook, etc. as classes entirely; this presents even more of a bias to those kids who are able to take a "class" as an extracurricular. I felt that getting a real education in high school (if one even exists considering how crappy the education is at mine) required taking actual classes, which was why I had never considered newspaper or yearbook. /rant

I agree w/the last part darkdestroyer. Same reason I didnt take yearbook, etc.

However, I did make semifinalist...I put down around 350 hrs of community service, many awards, 12 + APs, 4.0, leadership...etc. Income bracket high..AND I applied on the 30th.

So, it's interesting to figure out what their criteria was...semifinalists and nonsemifinalists seem to be all over the board.

your income bracket was high and you got in? I'm a questbridge applicant, so I guess income wasn't much of a factor in the application at all.

I'm a questbridge finalist too! and i don't understand why we got chosen for questbridge and we didn't for coke which is much easier to do in the first place!I'm missing something! and I want some explanation!

Lavie, are your incredibly stupid? Questbridge and Coca-cola are on two separate level. Ano no, Questbridge is not harder than coke to get

sorry, but it's much harder to get Questbridge because the application in the first place it's a college application with everything included, even essay and teachers recommendation, which is not the case with COKE who asks only to fill out a form!

and please do not call stupid! I NEVER INSULTED YOU!

I didn't make it. I definitely don't remember having to write my GPA or SAT on the application. Did I miss something?

Yes you did, lol.

haha yea there was def a spot for both

I don't think ACT/SAT matters much for the first round maybe? I had a 28 before I took the Nov. ACT. I thought I had no hope for the Coca-cola scholarship and spent only like 20 minutes on it. It was a miracle when I received the email. It was in the junk mail so I thought it was a scam or something lol. Congratulations guys!

Does anyone know if there's a list for the semifinalists? I can't seem to find one on the site...

I don't think they'd post a list of 2,100 students. I doubt they'll post anything until the finalists are selected.
