yeah i put that i sing, am a HOBY almuni, did a speech competition, little things like that. have you mailed yours in yet??

Yes-- all of the things you mentioned right there are perfect for that section. And no, I still have ALL of my essays to do yet :-(

At least the due date is a POSTMARK deadline.

Good luck!!

yes, good luck to you too. i just mailed mine yesterday. those essays made me so stressed. i didn't want to send mine in yet, i felt like things could be improved and i checked and double checked everything multiple times but i knew if i didnt send it off soon id forget or wouldnt have time. im such a worrier. well again good luck to everyone!

i am confused on the volunteering section

most of my volunteer activities/projects I have been doing for many years...so lets say i have food drive for 2006, 2007, 2008...does it go under the "2008 section" or the "prior to 2008 section"?

thanksss

oh and since there is a special section for volunteering, im assuming volunteering should not be put in the "non school related activities" either.

what about varsity sports?

You would put the volunteering under BOTH if they occurred during both periods, but for dates for the 2008 section, only list 2008 dates and hours. Likewise, only list prior to 2008 dates and hours in the prior to 2008 section.

And yes, volunteer activities do NOT go under "non school related activities." That's basically just catch-all for anything other than school stuff, volunteer stuff, or work stuff. Also, varsity sports should go under the school section as it's a school sponsored program. Even things that are of academic nature but aren't expressly sponsored by the school (i.e. a national science competition or something like that) would go under the school section.

Strange, guess I didn't make it, o well.

And I don't know my user name/pw, etc. Any help w/ that?

What about things like National Hispanic Scholar/National Merit Semifinalist? Do they already know from the first application?

My guess is they don't really care. I mean... they don't ask you for your SAT/ACT scores in the semi-finalist app, right? So why would they care if you got National Merit.

that'd go under awards/honors

but im a little apprehensive about putting them under both sections cuz they say in the directions "do not list 2008 activities here" unless they are referring to ones that were only during 2008?

medkid06:

Suppose I was President of the Sierra Club from 2006-2008. Under the prior to 2008 section I would put that I was President of the Sierra Club from 2006-2007. Under the 2008 section I would put that i was President of the Sierra Club during 2008.

They just want to be able to easily tell how active you have been in community service within the last year compared with all other years of high school.

Are you guys filling up all the boxes on the questionare? or how many out of total. I'm nowhere close to filling it up.

And what are some things that you guys put under advanced courses? Thinks like musics/athletic lessons or AP classes? Or what?

And where is the award section?

Medkid was mistaken. There is no awards section. You can however mention awards related to a specific activity in a column. Don't bother mentioning stuff like national merit.

No- they don't intend you to use all of the boxes, they just provide them if, in some freak chance, you need them. Personally I think they should have fewer boxes and let you type more, but that just ain't so.

No- this is things like summer programs for credit, dual-enrollment (i.e. courses at a university, also known as concurrent enrollment), etc. And they only want things here that won't already be listed on your transcript. So basically to answer this question, if you get college credit for a course you took outside your high school (and NOT just taking an AP), then list the course here.

Thanks for your gelp icfireball. How are you such an expert lol?

Could you also answer how important the essays are? If your other stuff is great, how important are they? and what about the recs? How much weight do they hold?

I've talked with a college counselor that used to read for coca-cola.

Essays are very important for the coca-cola scholarship. First, the essays are one of the categories your judged on. Each category is judged on a scale of 1-4, if I recall correctly and the aggregate sum is your final score. There's one whole additional category where judges can add up to 4 (or whatever the highest mark is for a category) discretionary points. A good essay will help you in this category as well. And your essays DO get read so it's important to make an impact.

That being said, it doesn't have to be the best, most well-crafted, error-free writing you've ever done. Just show that you put decent thought and effort into it and make it specific and personal.

Thanks for the help. Are you guys even close to filling up all the line?

And how important are the recs?

And no, I'm not even close to filling up all of the lines... either we're both bad candidates or that's the way it's supposed to be. I'd like to think the latter.

I would assume recs fairly important.

what do we put under the "publicly recognized" part under educator of distinction?

and, do we have to upload it AND mail it?
