oh and the link to go and upload things isn't working!

nvm, no upload required.!

No upload, just mail, as you seem to have figured out.

The date of "publicly recognized" date is the date in which the award to YOU (if you won) would be publicly announced and received. So basically, if you're school has a end-of-year awards ceremony, it's this date. If not, talk to your principal and pick a date :-p

I really hope I get this! I need all the help I can get....when do we find out if wewon?

february i think they'll notify us

You find out in February if you are a finalist. If you are a finalist you are one of 250 students selected. Coke flys you to Atlanta for free for an interview. Of the 250 finalists, 50 win the grand daddy prize of $20,000 each and the remaining 200 win $10,000 each.

Having finally finished my coca-cola essays, I think they are probably more poorly written and organized then my college app essays, but they tell a better, more complete story.

I just finished my true "essay" so now I get to move on to "short answers" which are really just more essays.. haha.

icfireball, if you don't mind me asking, what did you write about as your passion? I'm just interested to see what others wrote about.

Lucky me haha!! I wrote one for physics for the college which I spent a month on, so I just used it for this scholarship:)

Finally sent it in!

How many things did you guys have for the outside classes thing? I only had 1 b/c all my others were on the transcript.

And I take it volunteering is important for this award? How many hours do you guys have?

And how much of a factor do rank and sat scores have?

bump.................

I don't know about how important SAT and rank are, but I would say, they're probably reflective of the level of student you are. So I would say somewhere equal to letters of recommendation. But I could be wrong, it's a complete guess.

For the outside of class thing I ended up with 4 maybe 5 things.
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes was the most important one. I mentioned it in my volunteering space too but I figured since I've raised over 50,000 dollars and put almost 170 hours into it, it would an activity. haha. I also put my youth group stuff, skiing, watersports stuff, and a company I founded that made DVD slideshows of student activities.

For Volunteering, I think I ended up with right at 300 hours. 110 of which were from this year.

Do you think it will matter if I send the scholarship in a different envelope than the one they sent me??... (it's hidden somewhere in my room haha or lost..)

rfwcphs1, I wrote about how I'm involved with my school community and the legacy I have left/want to leave. Basically my passion is my school life and community because between track, xc, school, etc, it's not uncommon that I'll spend more time at school than I do at home.

az1698– Yes, it seems volunteering is very important. My 2008 hours were a little over 400 and prior to '08 was not quite 600.

rfwcphs1– SAT doesn't even factor in directly... the categories you're evaluated on are general things like, leadership, academics, etc. The only reflection of your academics that I'm aware of is your secondary school report, teacher recs, and whatever is in the application. So to whatever extent rank defines how good you are academically that will help you.

And good luck to all!

I am suchhh a procrastinator, but I finally got it all done. I just need to get my letters from my teacher and GS Leader. I'll just be sending it in Friday probaly. It says to send it in Priority Mail if you're a "do everything at the last possible minute" person like me, is that what everybody else is doing?

Wow, I just found this thread...I finished my finalist app back in mid-December. I must say thanks to icfireball for all of the great information he has shared. I had no idea how the process worked before. I also have a question. For those who are awarded the 10,000 or 20,000 prize, how and when do you access these funds? I'm not savy with scholarship funds, so perhaps someone else knows the answer. I have also heard you can use the CC scholarship for "educationally related" materials, like a laptop persay. Can anyone clarify how this works as well? thanks for any help!

Hey JaradW:

Rules on accessing scholarship funds varies widely, and your college may have their own set of rules. Although I don't know most of the details with the Coca-Cola scholarship, here's some general info:

The Coca-Cola scholarship is a one-time award. This usually means it must be used all at the same time, although Coca-Cola may be flexible about this.

Some colleges have a maximum amount of scholarship contribution before they start subtracting their financial aid, dollar-for-dollar. For example, at Yale this amount is $3,700 plus an additional $2,500 if you buy a laptop for your freshmen year, and $5,000 each other year. So whatever amount of scholarship over those maximums, Yale would reduce the money they give you. So if you only get say $8,000 of financial aid, the scholarship effectively gives you $18,000 [$20,000 - ($8,000-$5000)]. Remember, ever college is different, and may let you use all of your scholarship while still maintaining standard financial aid.

I addressed your question about the laptop somewhat in part two, but more generally, some schools will allow the purchase of a laptop to be included in your freshmen year college costs.

thanks for your once again informative responses. you are a great help

i wrote about my passion in medicine...i want to be a global children's doctor (work in underdeveloped countries).

my "extra" list had about 4-5 things too (started a business, self-taught guitar, club soccer, etc.)

and my community services hours were just over 400 for 2008
and about 200 for prior to 2008

I agree with the prior posts...I think SAT/ACT is just used as a confirmation on your academic ability, but not a crucial factor in the decision process.

oh and just a clarification question..are they notifying us in February or March? In the e-mail they sent it said "We will review applications Jan 29 - Feb 2, with decisions mailed and emailed to you by March 11."

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE! ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO ARE TRYING TO FINISH THEIRS IN TIME!!

I hope us CC'ers get it!

Wow.... all have a lots of hours!!!

I had 210 in total for major engagements :(
