Are nespresso machines allowed in wellesley dorms or lk single pod coffee machines? Thanks!
I would really appreciate an answer from someone who knows directly whether or not they are allowed.
They are not allowed, but people bring things like that anyway. Do what you will with this info. Just be aware that storage (and hiding places for stuff like your Keurig or electric kettle) are very tight.
@Massmomm I would think the advice on storage varies by residence hall. Back in my time my roomie hid her hot water heater in our Beebe closet without incident.
They are concerned about the exposed heating element, but since single pod coffee machines have non exposed heating elements? It should be within the rules right?
My D1 is a freshman at BC. We were told that Keurigs (and similar machines) are banned because of the electrical draw triggering blown fuses, not as a potential fire hazard in the room. D2 received likely from Wellesley EE so I’m interested to learn if the rule is the same.
Yes, they’re banned. My D is a junior and they were not allowed her first two years there. She’s abroad this year, so it’s possible they’ve changed the rule, but I doubt it.
Still banned!
Wow. This really sucks. If coffee machines aren’t allowed, is there a constant flow of coffee in the dining halls?
@wellesley1998 My D says, “Yes! It’s always there. They have regular, French vanilla, and the little powdered Nescafe kind.” There is also a Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts somewhat close to one corner of the campus, a Peet’s down the road, and Whole Foods further down the road. She has not found decaf coffee on campus.
My D also says that although coffee machines are banned most RA’s do not care if you have one. A ton of people have them anyway and my D has even seen them posted on the Free and For Sale board. RA’s will tell you to get rid of it if they find it during your room check. Room checks happen once a semester and they give you a week or two heads up that there will be a room check. She says they DO enforce the “no microwave” rule. NO MICROWAVES. That’s about it.
I can’t edit anymore-- but DISCLAIMER in case you get the stickler RA! Hide that thing if you have one. I believe they can fine you for housing banned items. (???) So it’s a risk of your own accord. Best to read the rule book.
Thanks guys for this advanced information. I wonder if there are any other rules that entering first-years should know about?
Not a rule, but something that might be helpful: There’s a sustainability sale where outgoing students sell their stuff to incoming students and usually you can get stuff for cheap, like a room fan or extra light or binders or whatever. I saw some pictures and there were TONS of coat hangers. TONS of binders. Mini-fridges go pretty fast but they are there too. You don’t have to lug every single thing across the country. They also offer Target trips during Orientation so you can buy sheets or shampoo or whatever you need. So, you don’t HAVE to bring or ship EVERYTHING.
Amazon Student is free for 6 months and might be very useful. Wait until Aug/Sept to sign up so you can get your full six months for books for both semesters. (The bookstore is usually more expensive.)
Do make sure you have decent winter wear by December at least. Waterproof warm boots, gloves, a real coat, all that, although there is a “closet” somewhere with donated items where you can get that stuff free too (if they have your size). One thing you WILL need in the beginning is a good room fan. No AC in the dorms.
@redpoodles Thank you!!! These are REALLY helpful to me!!!
My daughter “shops” regularly in the clothing bin in her res hall. She also uses the “free and for sale” site to get things she wants, er, needs. Also, she has an Amazon prime account (free shipping), so she orders her books from there. Way cheaper than the bookstore and you can find used books by googling the ISBN number.
Renting a Zipcar is cheap and easy if you need to shop for stuff or get to appointments off-campus, and you only have to be 18 with a valid license.
