My D is starting the college search. One of the schools she is looking at is Colby College. As a mom, my main concern is that she is comfortable and eating well at school. Could anyone tell me what the dorms and food are like at Colby? Are the dorms clean and comfortable? Would she have some good food choices as a vegetarian?
This is in the wrong school forum. Perhaps a moderator could move it? @skieurope ?
Food at Colby is reportedly great, btw. One dining hall in particular, Foss, has lots of vegetarian and vegan options although I think you’d have vegetarian options at any dining hall. You may be able to see the daily menus at all dining halls on their website under Campus(Dining) since you’re looking for specific menus.
There are a variety of dorms, and most of the freshman seem happy with where they end up although I’d suspect that as a parent, you might think that some of the rooms look small and some a little tired but still clean. (I heard that each dorm building is renovated every 20 years, so if you get in one that’s coming up on that 20 year mark, it may look dated.) But yes, they are clean, there’s plenty of hot water in the showers, and accessible laundry, etc. Housing for upperclassmen (Alfond Apts.) is nicer for sure. You can look at floor plans under Campus (Residential Life) under the housing process.
With all that said, I think that at any school in this tier, the food and housing will be more than adequate and probably won’t be the make or break on the decision.
We ate lunch at Dana this past Friday, and the food was fantastic. We even asked a few students, some who we knew from home, if this was for the benefit of the Admitteds and parents, and they all told us this was a standard meal for Colby (Bon Appetit). Additionally, the caf was VERY clean: no napkins or debris on the floor; all the serving areas, including the ice cream bar, were spotless; the students were good about bussing their plates and staff was quick to wipe up any mess (not that their was much mess to begin with).
I’ve asked a few parents I know who’s kids attend other colleges serviced by Bon Appetit, and they all said the food at those schools is (in their own words) fantastic/amazing as well.
