Colby Life Documentary

Is Colby really a place where intellectual conversation doesn’t exist outside the classroom? Are kids this lonely? Or is this just a great video explaining that college is like this everywhere, and you’ve got to figure it out. Is it a super cliquey school? Do Colby students promote social justice the way students at say Vassar, Grinnell, or Bates allegedly do? I’m fine with partying, but I hope I can go to a school that is very accepting, and even appreciative of various backgrounds and personalities. Visiting Colby at the end of the month, and this video sort of scares me, lol.

Reading the thread “Positive or Negative” in this forum will get you started.

As a current student, I strongly disagree with some of the statements made when considering the campus and student body as a whole. Colby is absolutely an environment where intellectual conversation exists outside the classroom. I cannot count the number of times I have left a conversation at a dining hall, in the library, or in a dorm room thinking about something from a new perspective. It is not only stimulating but contagious; through the Colby experience, students discover passions and interests, sharing them with others. Students support activism and social justice, considering the world and people beyond Colby.

Like at any other school or group setting, people are drawn to those who share common interests, but by no means do I think Colby is cliquey. In my years, I have found a unique sense of community here. Students are part of communities throughout campus—in dorms, clubs, classes, COOT, and many more. Each community is connected and makes up the larger Colby community. I have made friends and met people through many of these communities, and continue to foster new relationships. Students are curious, welcoming, accepting, and appreciative of different backgrounds and personalities.

I second what Holly said. As a Colby student, I find it to be a super-accepting environment that’s basically a bunch of brainy kids trying to learn about the world, learn to think for themselves and then learn who to make their world better. I knew I liked Colby when I applied, but after bing here for a year I found I have fallen madly in love with this school.

It seems like all of the people interviewed were especially unhappy, I seriously doubt it’s how many people feel.
