Swimming goggles? I guess my S could use the ones he has from water polo and swim team days. I’m pretty sure he would be caught dead doing so, though.

Why are you outside walking around in a blizzard with 30 mph winds?

Agree with those above who said that the stores in the south have limited selections for winter gear. They go on sale after the first of the year and are pretty much gone shortly thereafter. There are many more to choose from at stores like Burlington Coat Factory or Syms, with at times pretty decent choices. If you have a ski and snowboard shop in your area (lots of skiiers in Tx) try there. Lots on clearance racks too, especially now. Personally, I wouldn’t buy a coat on line. I prefer to try it on.

But the OP’s son will presumably be in Minnesota for some of the spring/summer, when the department stores there will be clearing out their legit winter gear.

^ true, Senior0991, but the student may or may not have transportation to the stores, may or may not have a place to store additional winter gear over the simmer and, if he is anything like my guys, hates, hates HATES going shopping and will avoid it like the plague if it isnt for something immediately necessary.

^Get out! Guys hate shopping!?

haha yeah I guess my responses are biased because I love shopping and will find any excuse to go, but I guess that’s not the norm.

Taking the trash out.
Digging out the car so that I can move it so that the snow plow can clear our driveway.
Getting the mail.
Clearing snow off the roof so that we don’t have ice dams.
Picking up a few groceries.
Getting caught in a blizzard because the weather prediction was off by a few hours.

having to walk from the parking lot/bus stop to class
shoveling the driveway (to later be able to go from the house to driveway)
going to see an NFL game

I’ll add that ski goggles are another, generally warmer, option.

You can get tinted ski goggles too.

The thing that I like about the chem lab goggles is that I can wear them right over my prescription glasses. They don’t fog up either.

With 30 mph winds, the snow you clear from the driveway will probably just blow right back :(

Mail can wait til the blizzard stops, trash wont get picked up in storms like that, etc. Stay inside!!

Some of it may. It often depends on the type of snow. The heavy, wet stuff is less likely to blow around as much. Some of the calculus depends on the shape of structures in your driveway. I like to keep my car clear of snow in case I have to go out or need to move it for the snow plow. It’s a lot easier clearing an inch or two off than a foot if I need to move it in a hurry.

I don’t pick up the mail every day and I do mail things from time to time.

We have a dumpster for trash.

Shopping done. We skipped the goggles and flannel-lined jeans (way too heavy for his tastes), opting for a pair of roomy jeans so plenty of space for the longjohns. We went with the expensive jacket and opted for much-cheaper mittens, which he’ll pair with those cheapie gloves inside. And I bought lots of extras of those, as per PG’s suggestion. He kept the snow pants he bought. Anything else I’ll send as needed or he can take the shuttle into town to the Target.

The new forecast for Saturday is a high of 9. Practically a heatwave.

Thanks for your help, everyone.

Hope he enjoys the winter season, yds. It has its own distinctive pleasures. :)

Thanks, dbwes. He’s really excited. And, truthfully, I think he’ll get plenty of wear from the snow pants because he told us the best thing about last semester was going traying with friends. I can see him frolicking now – a big, black, stuffed tick flying down the hill. :D
