I am deciding between Colgate and Bucknell now. I want to do pre-med, any ideas on which school has a stronger science program? Also, which do you think is more likely to get me into (a good) medical school? I haven't visited either yet (I will soon), but from what I hear, the campus atmospheres are very similar.

Thank you for your input!

There is a gold mine of information about these schools on this site and elsewhere and so I suggest you get to work looking for facts, indicators of success and then down to road for opinions.

You should decide precisely what you are looking for and satisfy yourself that you have done the work to make your campus visits as meaningful and productive as possible. Some ideas are what the 2 schools’ websites say (and don’t say) about themselves. I would recommend you did deep about course offerings, programs (eg pre-med, study groups, research), facilities, professional outcomes, professors’ bios- and that is just on the academics front. You might as well make up a list of attributes and what remains for you to explore directly with the schools’ representatives- admissions, faculty, staff, students, local townspeople and alumni.

You also have more general information from USN&WR at the detail level (and with an open, critical mind as to their methodology) and anecdotal information from other sites such as this one. Don’t overlook the possibilities for financial aid, diversity initiatives, lecture series, symposiums, options for residential life including the scope/importance of the Greek scene, athletics etc. You say that they are similar but your characterizations will be richly broadened when you do the work I have suggested. That will make all the difference to you!

Good luck with your preparations!

First of all, you will have to major in a subject such as biology, neuroscience, chemistry, etc not “pre-med” and perhaps you should decide based on whichever department you choose. Neuroscience is very strong at Colgate if that is of interest.
