colgate vs University of rochester

Which school is more highly regarded?

theyre not regarded very differently, just pick your favorite

Daughter accepted to both eventually chose UR

Colgate--remote location, LAC, great academics, very smart kids yet reputation as a party school due to strong frat culture

UR--outskirts of city, small highly regarded research univ., kids seem a little nerdy yet down to earth, was a better fit for daughter

Both schools made Newsweek's list of 25 "new ivies", but are very different.

Wow...I am so surprised at the question. I always thought that Colgate was WAY, WAY more highly regarded. Has UR changed that much?

spidey:

Check out the avg SAT scores of UR--they're quite high, though not as high as Colgate's

Colgate: freshman SAT scores in 600 or better verbal=86% math=90%
UR: freshman SAT scores in 600 or better verbal=72% math=82%

UR's endowment is close to 1.5 billion, which puts it in top 30 in that regard.

They are also very different in focus. Colgate is a liberal arts college, with very limited graduate programs. UR has a medical school, along with the Eastman school of music (which is right up there with Juliard).

Colgate's curriculum is very structured, while UR's is very open.

It comes down to a question of fit. Again, for my daughter, UR appears to fit her personality.

That is interesting - who knew? Good for UR! I do think though that there is this shine that some schools have over others, for example Julliard towers over Eastman in that regard. I'm not quite sure where it comes from - Tradition? Movies? Colgate definitely has more of a shine to it in terms of name recognition and sticker factor (that jazzed feeling parents get in their bellies when they attach the sticker to the back of their car). A lot is changing in the college marketplace, though, that is for sure.

Thanks so much for your thoughts on this. My son picked Colgate and I was having second thoughts-- but he definately wanted a LAC-- so Colgate it is.
By the way Spideygirl, Rochester has come way up in the rankings since they reduced the size of their undergraduate school and introduced a more open
curriculum. And if I had to guess, it may have been harder to get into this year than Colgate.

When my daughter tells people she is going to UR next year, she gets one of two reactions: either a "Wow, good for you!" or "Is that a SUNY state school?" Colgate probably gets a more consistent reaction.

My daughter gets both of those reactions, plus "I didn't know you were interested in engineering" (from those who think it's Rochester Institute of Technology).

rochester rochester rochester!!! i love it here

and my dad teaches freshman writing there so you might end up with a pretty cool professor :)
