College 9/10 Dining Halls

Sooooo,
I applied to C 9/10 dining halls and got the job(s)... As a dishwasher, an omelet maker, and a pizza maker. I read somewhere else on this forum that these particular dining hall's managers are kind of rough...

Is there anyone who has worked there who can give me some insight? I was also wondering if, being a girl and all, is washing dishes going to be hard for me? I do wash dishes all the time at home and at my current job, but I usually just help the men who work in the back. I work out, but I kind of think that is a physically too demanding for a chick... The bus/dishwork at the current restaurant that I work at here at home and the bus trays are HEAVY and I don't want to get hurt.

Anyone with insight? Thanks

I’ll try to get one of my friends who worked there to come here and give his insight.

Meanwhile, awesome screen name, hahaha

I worked there and trust me, it’s not hard at all. It’s not like washing dishes at home. All you really have to do is put dishes in a tray, push them down the belt that takes the trays to the washing machine and then you have to sort them after they dry. The only bad thing about working dish is that you have to compost all the leftover food and sometimes it can make you feel sick. It’s really sad how many people can’t compost their own food or waste so much food.

Being a girl doesn’t really matter. But i would strongly suggesting getting trained as a Cashier ASAP and get as many Cashier positions as possible. You can work at any station without having to be a weightlifter. Most of the stations only have light or very light lifting.

Omelet is pretty fun but it sucks waking up so early. Pizza can be boring sometimes but the plus side is that the supervisors and managers don’t come around so often so you can kinda chill when it’s not that busy and possibly even eat some pizza if you want. haha Just don’t get caught.

Also, if you plan to text during work, make sure that if you ever get caught, just promise to not do it again and be nice otherwise you’ll get fired. There are some good places to text and get away with it and you’ll figure that out after working there and making friends with the full time workers or student workers. I met some really awesome people who also worked there so don’t be shy! Say hi! Good luck with the DH tho.

Also, I made a College 9/10 Dining Hall Group on Facebook that has it’s benefits. Everyone mostly used it to find someone to cover their shift when they couldn’t work (either sick or needed to go home for the weekend or something)

Private message me and i’ll link you to the group.

Justdoit415, That’s good to know that it won’t be too hard. How are the managers? I have worked and currently work at a restaurant (the same one) since I got out of high school four years ago. I work MY ASS off there. I do workout and can lift heavy things, but those bus trays overflowing with dishes really began to wear and tear on my shoulders! I was hoping it wasn’t the same thing at the dining halls… And at home, my parents compost EVERYTHING so I am pretty much have been used to that since middle school. I’m glad you said something, I was kind of second guessing myself lol…

Are the managers strict there??? Getting fired for texting? Wow! Lol, my current boss doesn’t really care about it so I am hoping that I won’t carry that bad habit over. Also, is getting a cashier job hard? Do you like have to ask them to train you for it? Or do you apply? I have 4 years cashier experience so I think I’d do well at that…

Thanks SO MUCH again for replying… Unfortunately, I do not have a facebook or myspace. I deleted them because I wasted 4 hours or more a day on them. Now I exercise and chill with friends instead! lol!

The only nice managers are Mike and Nate that they mostly only work at nighttime though. Just be careful around Jeane and Debby. I’m pretty sure I misspelled their names but it’s probably because I don’t really about them.

I think people get fired from texting from either getting caught too many times or getting mad at the managers from catching them.

Cashier is the EASIEST job hands down. You have more than enough experience to be a cashier. Normally they don’t just let anyone do it but i would ask and tell them if they need a cashier, that you’ll be able to get trained quickly and you’ll do it.

And it’s all good. Don’t worry about FB or MS but I would suggest to get your FB back so you can use the Dining Hall Group. It’s really useful to find someone to cover your shift.

JUSTDOIT415, yeah I was thinking about getting my fb back but I am not too sure. I’d rather get everyone’s #'s instead… But we’ll see. Two of the shifts they wanted to hire me for are basically at night time. One is from 9 to 1230 am (i was like…wow!! my current restaurant closes at 9). And another shift is from 330 to 730 pm, so hopefully the cool managers will be there. At my current place of work, I try not to text, but I find myself texting when near the end of my shift, like 30 min before I get out. I don’t have too much of a temper problem whenever I get in trouble at work, and my managers do not want to fire me even if they caught me a 3 times in one day (they don’t even want me to leave… ). I am SO good at cashiering…maybe I should do that instead lolol I have only been short once, and that was by 3 cents!

Hey it’s all good.

Just giving you a heads up, when it’s late night like 9pm-12:30am, you might get out earlier if the people you work with are fast but most of the time, you’ll have to stay longer.

3:30-7:30 should be an okay shift and a good chance to have the good managers.

That’s good about texting and everyone does it too so it’s whatever. But as for cashiering, I forgot about the policy about if you had too much or not enough in your register but any difference is bad.

Oh yeah, if you are over money you’d think that your manager would be happy, but it is even worse than being short. It means that your ringing up stuff and stealing the money (opposite of what you’d think). My manager has caught a few people that way, when an employee was “ringing” up customers, canceling it, opening the register and putting the money in then taking it later and reporting more money than they actually had… In my four years at my job, four people have been fired for that reason! Its crazy!

What about early morning shifts? Like opening? I have one.

So, do people mean that the managers are mean as in they actually follow the rules and are less lax, or are they actually mean? I come from a verryyy lax job, and I think it would be nice to have one that is less lax because this won’t allow certain levels of unprofessionalism that i have seen in an easy-going setting. Its probably more enjoyable having easy-going managers. I mean, my managers have let people leave without doing their sidework and it always falls on me, which I don’t mind because I get more money that way! lol!

Does anyone know if they send a notification to you if you do not get the job? A friend of mine applied for a job at Terra Fresca being her first choice and the 9/10 dining hall being her second. She has not heard back at all and it seems like they’ve already sent out emails to people who got the job already.

Then most likely she hasn’t gotten it… Tell her to email them if you can find their emails. We’re all already making our payroll appointments and such
