student employment question...just got the mail...

I am assigned to dining hall service....I kind of don't want to work in dining service....is it possible for me to change to something else?? also is it possible to stop working during the year if I want to because I want to use the working time to do other things?? like study, HW, other activities...???

I definitely thought I was going to be assigned a job (it was part of my original aid package), but the letter said that I fall into the category of students who "don't apply for financial aid or don't have a job as part of a financial aid award." Hmmm. In any case, I'm getting a job, so whatev.

A job in the dining hall is actually one of my first choices. It's a very social, fun environment, according to some who worked in PUDS last year. Someone once asked way back if it's possible to change after being assigned, and a student said yes, but it's no longer guaranteed that you'll be able to get a job. Not sure if that's for certain or not. Anyways, good luck with job stuff. I'm actually kind of excited about it :)

u r an international student right??
what kind of things do you do if you do dining service?? I hope it doesn't bother my studies..

No, I'm not an international. Dining is like all the behind-the-scenes dining work (washing dishes, cleaning, food service, etc.). I have no idea how much time you have to put in for work-study, but the letter I got said working an average of 6-9 hours per week yields $100-$160 (whatever that means). I don't imagine it'd interfere with your studies at all, if it's that little time.

Yeah, i'm dining services as well. Hurray for dishwashing?

What does the letter look like? i.e. who is the return address? I got 3 things today but not that.

Undergraduate Financial Aid - Student Employment Office. Hmmm...

Once you're on campus, you can go up to pretty much anywhere and ask if they're hiring student workers. Ideas: dining, mail room, library (not only Firestone, try the branches too), Frist front desk, media services, OIT, chapel choir. Dining services start at pay rate A, if I remember correctly, while library jobs higher (D). http://www.princeton.edu/se/book/17.htm#b

what..isn't library job much easier than dining service?? u can even sit and do your homework...i hear

Yeah, that's what she's saying! Look at the chart.

yea..i just thought dining service should get paid higher..

The "sitting" jobs in the library are paid at AA or around $6.50. You can sometimes get "working" jobs (some circulation desks, shelving, etc.) that pays better.

so basically for dining service, u don't serve food right?

ahhh so I have to wait another 2 weeks before I get to know where I'm working. Oh joy :(

no, i expect to get it in a week...the last few letters were delievered to u within a week...so happier times :) (trying to be optimistic)

Dining is buffet style, so you won't be taking orders or bringing dishes, but you will be looking after the trays and drink machines, as well as doing spots of cleaning. That's just what happens outside the kitchen; I don't know what goes on inside.

The description in the booklet said that most of the stuff is behind the scenes, washing dishes and stuff I guess.

Got my mail. Yay for Dining Services.

I dont understand it...we got the mail a day after everyone in us did!
anyways, go dining services...go dish washing :)

haha did anyone get anything apart from Dining Services?
