I am currently at risk of getting a D in my College Algebra class, which is the last math course that needs to be completed to finish my math GE. I need better than a -C to have the class count, which is still possible. I plan on transfering to a UC, so should I take College Algebra again in the summer just in case I don't get higher than a -C? And does a D still look bad if you retake the class and get an A or B?

college algebra for UCs? what is your major? if you dont mind.

If I were you, I would withdraw from the class. Take intro-to-stats, it’s way easier than college algebra

You can retake it for a higher grade but it will still show on your transcript.

I’m planning on majoring in economics. College algebra is on the IGETC requirements

^^if you major in economics you do realize you will be taking calculus 1 and 2–depending on which UC you go to. Which UC do you want to go to?

Yes, a college level algebra course will satisfy the IGETC requirement, but for your particular major there are more math classes that go under Major Prerequisites.

In case it hasn’t been explained to you before (or you haven’t seen it otherwise on this site), CC classes will fit into a couple categories (sometimes at the same time) of:

IGETC (your general ed courses)
Major Prerequisites
Elective fillers for UC/CSU transferrable credit amount requirements

A course signified on the IGETC can also satisfy a Major Prerequisite according to Assist and vice versa. However, a single class cannot satisfy more than 1 IGETC area, so there’s no 1 class that will complete multiple areas at once.

Therefore, if you plan to transfer to a UC (or even a CSU for Economics), then you will eventually need to take a Calculus class. Technically you can apply without all Major Prereqs done, but it may affect your chances of admission and even if you are accepted, then you will need to take Calc at the 4-year to claim the major.

Anyhoo, to answer the question, as Silenhillnight says, you can retake the course for the higher grade, but all grades will show on the transcript.

here
[Welcome to ASSIST](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

no need for me to explain. Go there.

For economics, you will need at least a year of calculus.

If you are considering graduate school in economics, you need much math than that, including upper division courses:
[Preparation | Department of Economics](Preparation | Department of Economics)
In the latter case, look at the ASSIST page for the math requirements for the statistics major to get an idea of what you should take at community college before transfer.

Should I just take a calculus class that meets both GE and economics pre requisites and not worry about taking College Algebra again, regardless if I get less than a C?

Get less than C in what? College Algebra or calculus?

Your Math GE as in IGETC? sorry to tell you, but UC’s will not let you take your only transferable math course this summer, you have to pass this spring or its done for, it should be in your provisional contract (especially English and Math courses your trying to fulfill it for your IGETC this spring). Unless I am misreading here but thats what UC’s and my CC told me

if it is your major pre-req then depends on its absolutely required for it…

I just checked ASSIST and need to pass College Algebra with a C before moving onto Calculus

If you’re struggling with basic algebra, you might want to reevaluate your plan to study economics.

For reference I passed algebra in HS when I was 13. While “college” algebra is somewhat harder in terms of their expectations, it’s by no means anything I couldn’t have handled when I was 13.

these are the USUAL requirements for econ

Calc 1, 2 (sometimes 3)
(sometimes linear algebra and/or differential equations)
econ 1, 2

other SUGGESTED courses to go along with this
stats 1
accounting 1, 2

@MattyMay93

Wait, so you can’t take Calculus as of now? So, you don’t have the pre-reqs to be in a Calculus? Don’t you need pre-calc before you can take Calc? I’m so confused now.

If you get a “C” on College Algebra, since it is UC-Transferable, it will drop your GPA by A LOT! Do not get a “C” on College Algebra and do not get anything below an “A” if you want to get into Berkeley. You are competing against all “A-straight” students for Berkeley.

I didn’t read everyone’s responses so forgive me if anyone already said this…

I had a similar situation. It was a couple of semesters before I was going to apply to transfer and I got a D in a math course but the professor knew I was trying my hardest (I came to every study session, received help during office hours, etc) and I was lucky enough to have him give me an Incomplete and then let me take his class the next semester, off the roster, to replace the grade I had received. He and I both knew that this would mean I would not be able to transfer to a UC and I got cut a break- some subjects just don’t click with certain people. I would try and show up as much as possible to every opportunity you have to raise your grade in this class- if it ends up not being possible I would ask for a second change- **** happens and we are all human.

berk is no life. You sleep in the lab or school for 2 years. If you have a C in college algebra, then I think you need to work harder like 10x for berk?
