My daughter is starting on the Blinn Team. She took the math placement and scored in the College Algebra level from TAMU. Does this mean she has to take College Algebra before she can take Business Math I Math 141?

She is going to be on track B for Ag Communication and Journalism that requires one Business Math and the second math can possibly be a Philosophy course or Business Math II.

If she does have to take College Algebra first then she needs to get that done in summer school.

Any advice would be appreciated.

On the TAMU Course Description website the only requirement for Math 141 is high school Algebra I & II and Geometry. On Blinn’s website the requirements for Math 1324 is MATH 1314 or MATH 1325 or (MATH 2412 or higher) or equivalent with a grade of ‘C’ or better or an appropriate score on the math section of the SAT or ACT. The best advice is to contact an adviser on the campus your child will take the course.

Thanks that is what I read and it seemed difficult to believe the prerequisites at TAMU were lower than at Blinn where she will take the course. A call to Blinn is in order. She had College Algebra in high school just not for Dual Credit.

Thanks again.

If it advised her to take college Algebra, that’s typically a good indication of where she needs to go. She won’t be forced to do anything, she can choose which class she wants. However, kids that choose to take a math higher then recommended have a higher probability of doing worse then a kid who was recommended to take a math course.

Blinn is really wierd about 1324…they told a friend of mine, and a lot of others, to take algebra (if you didn’t test out), then 1325, then 1324. You talk to a Blinn Advisor, I guarantee that is what they will say.

I don’t understand it because 1324 is essentially applied algebra and early statistics. I took them at a different CC, but we used the same book as Blinn, and 1324 finished up with simple derivatives. 1325 started off with derivatives and integration, so I don’t know why you’d want to switch them around.

Thanks for the advice. I want to follow advice of the advisor, but not if it doesn’t make sense.

Also, she plans to apply to transfer after the fall semester. We met with an admissions officer who told her to get one of the math courses done to enhance her transfer chances. Ag Comm does not seem to 100% require the math to be done for the transfer.

I don’t know if we should wait and have her take college algebra in the fall and see what happens on the transfer. She might get a higher grade if she takes it over a regular semester. She already plans to get tutoring through the schools and private tutors as necessary.

Thanks again for those who have weighed in or will weigh in with an opinion.

Maybe summer school is not the best idea.
