College asked for my parents' green cards?

Hi! I applied to UW- La Crosse and was checking up on my application when I saw that something new had been posted. They asked me for my green card. As an American citizen born in the United States, I was very confused. I called and they said they need my parents’ green cards to prove my residency in Wisconsin. I’m hesitant to send it in because it’s highly confidential information. Is it normal to send it something like this? Wouldn’t a license or electric bill work better?

I would be confused too. Green cards wouldn’t prove residency in Wisconsin. They’d prove US residency status.

Reading the UW website on residency, https://registrar.wisc.edu/residence.htm , they say that if you don’t send whatever information they request, they will classify you as a non-resident. Sounds rather heavy-handed. I’d give their residency office a call. The phone number is at the bottom of the linked page.

I’d call admissions as well and ask why they need it. It seems a drivers license or something would be a better proof of state residency than a green card (which I don’t think show state of residency).

They want proof of legal residency. A green card is part of that.
