IDOC is a part of the College Board organization that is essentially a clearing house for financial aid information. You will get an IDOC id number (email, perhaps?), sign on with that number, and print out a cover letter from them. Then you will send hard copies of whatever they ask for to them, based on what specific colleges ask for. You should hear from your schools, or have listed on aid application requirements whether you need to send tax return copies and schedules, etc. to IDOC. Then, IDOC will scan your info and make it available electronically to the schools that use that service. It is basically a service that helps schools save space and help all of us save paper. But it does take more time.

I don’t remember how it first gets generated; maybe another CCer will be able to answer that part of your questions, and anything that I am hazy about, in the first paragraph.
