I have signed up for the March 12th SAT online, and they ask where I want them to send my scores. It says that they will send it to four schools free of charge, and that additional schools will cost more. I really don't know if I should have them send it anywhere, as I don't know where I would say to send it. If I choose not to send it out now, can I have it sent after the test? Should I just pick four schools that I'm somewhat likely to apply to? Help?

How does it all work? I mean, on college apps, do you put down your SAT score, or do they find it online?

You can always have your scores sent later - for a fee. Colleges will require that a score report be sent to them, although some will accept scores reported on your high school transcript. Check to see if they will be on your transcript and check with the colleges in which you are interested.

My daughter's theory is to send the four free reports to her "safety" options.

Like fireflyscout said, you can send score reports later for $7. One other point to consider: If you apply to some of the top-50 colleges, you will most likely have to take the new SAT and 2 or 3 SAT II tests. The score reports that you send in the future will include your SAT I score and all previous SAT II scores, and this is what colleges will need before they make any decisions. In other words, sending scores out now won't hurt, but it won't necessarily help you either, since colleges will need a final score report before they ever consider your application. If anything, sending your scores will get you added to the colleges mailing list.

You MUST send scores directly from the College Board to the universities. The best strategy is to pick four schools you are pretty sure you are going to apply to. and then use the SAME SCHOOLS on every SAT test (I or II) you take. That way you know those four schools have all your scores. Then when you are applying to schools, if you apply to more than those four schools, you pay College Board to send all the scores you have taken to send ALL your scores to the schools that were not in your original list of 4.
