college class taken in high school

OK. So, this summer I took a 2-week intensive American Sign Language class at Gallaudet University. I have been signing for years so this was an upper level (ASL IV) class. I got a B.

Does Swarthmore require me to report this grade? If not, should I report it anyway? Gallaudet is not academically on par with Swat so I'm worried they might look on a B at Gally as a negative--even though the class was very challenging and I'm proud of how I did. On the other hand, a B is by no means horrible, and the very fact of taking and doing well in a college class might be a positive.

Sorry if this is an obvious question--I can't find anything explicit about it in Swat's website and mailings.

My feeling is, if ASL is an interest of yours, you should report it. Swat will probably not care too much about the grade you got on it. You should ask other people too.

Getting a B in level IV college class is not going to hurt your chances in any way.

If you are interested in ASL, you might also want to contact Donna Jo Napoli (she is a professor in Linguistics dept who teaches the Structure of ASL class).

omg Donna Jo Napoli the author? I read her book in 7th grade. heh.

yes, donna jo napoli. she rocks

thats awesome! holy ____ i can't believe it. heh

i got poor grades on two introduction level courses at a not prestigous college and reported them since they were the only classes i took last year. i was accepted.

definitely report the grade, especially if you were to, say, write your essay about sign language. which would be a great topic.

If I recall the Swat app, it has a space for listing summer courses, but does not ask for a grade. My daughter never listed any grades for three summer courses she had taken.

I don't think they would care, one way or another about grades. I do think that the summer ASL course would be interesting to the admissions office.

Swat's Linguistics department teaches courses on ASL. I believe it's an interest of Donna Jo Napoli, one of Swat's more interesting professors: she is a very well-known author of children's books that are translated into dozens of languages world wide. Do a search for ASL and Donna Jo on the Swat website. Or, e-mail her for information on ASL at Swat or to meet with her when you visit. That's a great way to connect your interests with specific things at Swarthmore, a really good approach to a college application.

Thank you to everyone for your responses! I do plan to contact Donna Jo Napoli once Swat is back in session (wouldn't want to interrupt her summer vacation...).
