College Clueless.+My chances?

I've been reading now all the "chances.." posts, and most everyone that's posted has gotten good news. Unfortunately, my chances look grim. 9th grade, I did pretty well but unfortunately, it won't help me here. 10th & 11th grade I attended a different school than freshman year and I didn't adjust well. School was not exactly my main focus for many reasons not related to school, mostly major family problems. The school I attended is a top Distinguished California school. Anyways, I am now back at the school I went to as a freshman and things have changed. University of Michigan happend. On a visit to Michigan I fell in love. End of story. So here I am to see how slim my chances are.

As for 10/11 grade, I didn't take any APs. I left my first school with a 3.6, but they didn't think I was smart enough, so I took all regulars. I didn't do all that bad though.
10th: 3.0 GPA
11th: 3.3 GPA
I'm not sure if these are unweighted or not because I don't know what that means but I know that Athletics is NOT included, only college prep classes.

SATS:
610 Math
480 Writing
430 Verbal
I did not study AT ALL & I know I'm smarter than this. Therefore, I am taking them again in October, which I have been studying for religiously.

ACTS: Not taking them. Good or Bad?

SENIOR YEAR:
I am taking 3 AP classes and 1 honors class.
AP Econ (Semester)
AP Govt (Semester)
AP English Lit
Math Analysis Honors (Will it hurt that I'm not in Calculus?)
and then Photography and World History (Sophmore class that I didn't take as a sophmore because of the switch)
I should be in AP World History but all the classes were way to full so I got stuck in regular.

Anyways, If I get straight As this semester, and send my transcripts after the semester is over, do you think I could get them to somehow consider my 1st semester senior grades? That would leave me with a better GPA, and I can show them that I really am suitable.

Even with a 3.3 GPA, I am in the top 25% of the highschool I currently attend. It is not that the school is bad, the students do not care to learn at all. The classes I am in are just as intense as the ones at the competitive school I went to, just people at the school I go to now are fine with gettings C's which makes it look bad. Also, about 20% of seniors actually plan on attending college. The rest would rather go to a CC, or beauty school.
So yea, all this I wish UMICH staff could see as to understand where I'm coming from.

I meet all the unit requirements including the recommeded requirements except for spanish. I've only had 3 years instead of the recommended 4.

Freshman Softball 1YR
JV Softball 1YR ......Awards: Coaches Choice & Best Batter
Cosmopolites (Club) 1 YR (Junior)
Tylers Team (Club) 1 YR (Junior)
Part time Job through Junior & Senior year (Takes up a lot of my time; necessary to help my family)
I plan on joining a club or two this year, if I find something I'm really interesting in but as for that, I am not very wealthy in the ECs.
I also might play softball again, but with a job it becomes difficult.

I understand this is definately a way far out reach school for me, but I want some feedback as to wether or not I'm wasting my time and hard earned money applying here. It is the ONLY school I want to go to so if I don't get in, it will be 2 yrs at Grand Rapids CC and then I'll transfer.
How tough is UMich to transfer into?

With straight As after 1st semester as a senior, I will be in the 3.6-4.2 GPA range..
I'm going to perfect my admissions essays..
I can get beautiful recommendation letters
Unfortunately I'm not from a minority
I'm not really that talented
I'm not a state resident
but I have pretty good standardized test scores

(Comparing myself to Collegeboard Admission Factors)

Considered:
Alumni Relation-None.
Class Rank- Top 25%.
Extracurricular Activities- Minimal.
Geographical Residence- California..that's cool right? Way different than Michigan..they should want geographical diversity, especially someone from California because we're cool.
Volunteer Work- Absolutely none. Yikes. :(
Work Experience- 2 year Part-time job

As you can see I've put much time into justifying myself and for a while I thought I had a chance of getting in but now I do not. Please, anyone, reply.

What should I aim for on the SATS?

HELP!! I really want to get into UMICH but I'm not getting my hopes up. Feedback please!

Thanks.

Hmm. If you were in-state, there might be a hope for you. But since you're from cali, man, you got your work cut OUT for you. Good luck. Study for your tests. You MUST get those up.

About being OOS, UM is in a paradox in that they want more OOS students, but they can only let in so many. Admissions is MUCH more competitive for OOS students. So..man...good luck, but don't get your hopes up.

You really need to do great on the October SATs. Good luck.

Sarah there is hope on the SAT! lol keep trying and good luck on the Oct SAT...You all must remember that I went from like a 1000-1180 and then got accepted into UM out of state...so never give up!

You might want to consider the ACT as well.

I only scored a 550 in the verbal and 660 on the math on the SAT, but got a 29 on the ACT.

Sarah, I am not going to lie and tell you that you have a chance. Your "Michigan GPA" is 3.2, and that's assuming it is unweighed. If your 3.2 GPA is weighed, it means that you actual GPA is significantly lower. Almost 100% of out of state students have GPAs well over 3.3. Your SAT score is 1040. Close too 100% of out of state students got 1200 or more on their SATs. Unless if you really work hard on your SAT and improve by 200 points, I really don't see how you have a chance. But Michigan does in fact accept a lot of transfers, so if you feel like you are ready to finish high school on a high note and if you do well at CC, you have a chance as a transfer. But for now, I would focus on your school grades and your SAT. If you can somehow improve your SAT by 150+ points, you may have a shot. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'd definitely consider the ACT. I got 33 on the ACT and 700 Math/620 Verbal on the SAT. That's a huge difference.
