So I got a thing in the mail from Amherst inviting me to apply to an diversity event today, and I've gotten past mail and email from others, mostly liberal arts colleges.
Can anyone shed any light on these things?
I thought they were like normal college tours, except for minorities, and based around selling the college.
But I have to apply for this thing?
I don't understand.

They are like normal college open house events. If there is an overnight stay involved, or a couple of meals, they may ask you to register in advance so that they can have a head-count. Read through the invitation/announcement and see if there is any indication that there are only a limited number of spaces at this particular event. That could be why it is called an “application”.

You also could just send them an email and ask about this, or call them on the phone.

Alright, thanks.
They asked for a transcript and a short essay, though.
So I assume there is some sort of academic weeding out process.

The Amherst DivOH only takes I believe 90 students for each of the two sessions.

Actually, no. Most of these programs (at least Amherst, Wesleyan, and Williams) are actually competitive because the school pays for an all-expense-paid visit. So if you get it they’ll fly you out, lodge, and feed you for a weekend.

If you couldn’t normally afford college visits, it can be a great opportunity. Yes, the school will try to sell themselves, but really, they’re paying for you to take a little mini-vacation… let them sell!

I just bumped up a thread for you started by Keilexandra that lists all the diversity weekend opportunities. Please add in any updates that you have.
