college --> e-school?

I am in the college and unfortunately, after 3 semesters I feel like I would like to transfer into the e-school, for the systems engineering program. However, I have only taken math classes in the college and I was wondering how the math compares and really if that is advisable b/c I dont know of that many students who actually transfer into the e-school from the college instead of transfer out.

I was wondering about how many students transfer from the College to the E-School and how it works out if one has not taken that many courses in the e-school. Is it terribly difficult to complete the e-school requirements in 2 years instead of 4?

any input would be much appreciated :)
thanks.

it is darn near impossible to finish in 2 years, you will probably have to stay another year in order to finish the curriculum. A handful of students transfer in, all are probably in their first year here.

essentially you will have to restart your career at UVA as a first year e-school student so I'd really think it over before you make the switch. If you need any more info on the systems program then send me a PM because that's what I'm majoring in.

This would be what you need to complete in 2 years - http://www.sys.virginia.edu/students/SIEplan2008regular072308.pdf - if you've taken those 6 math classes in the college (Calc 2, Calc 3, Diff Eq, Linear, Prob, Stat) then you might not be totally lost (CS would be another plus) but if you haven't you're definitely looking at another year PLUS eschool is really hard so I mean I don't know why you're transferring out of the college but it's not going to be any kind of cakewalk. Pretty much none of your college classes will count (they're HSS/unrestricted electives on that list to give you a feel) except maybe those math ones.

What if you don't transfer into the eschool, do you know what you might want to major in?

transferring into the e-school was just one of the things i was thinking about but I wanted to get all your views before I decided on anything. But from what it seems like it would be a stretch on my parents to have to pay an extra year of OOS tuition plus In some sense I would be a year "behind" compared to my peers/graduating class.
I don't believe e-school is cakewalk at all - i think it is definitely a lot of hard work but I was just looking into it as a possibility. I would still like to minor in systems/CS though and hopefully that will work out in 5 semesters..and maybe one summer.

@Hazelorb: Sorry, i didn't answer this in the previous post but if I will be majoring in economics in the College.

You'll be looking at, minimum, 2 extra years of college from the time you switch over. I would say you'll need three, since you've gotten your math/humanities over with, and if you've taken econ classes, they may count too. Systems has more flexibility in terms of classes than any other e-school major, so that will help. But, this is going to be a big decision.
You NEED TO contact someone in the systems dept. You can't just enter the program, you'll need to apply (there's a cap). My guess, is that they're going to want you to complete pre-reqs (the physics/chem/CS/math), then apply from there. You have a chance of not being able to enter the program, so you could be here an extra year from that, or if you decide to switch back to econ. But you really need to sit down with someone from that department and see if this is feasible.

Just wondering, why all of the sudden a change of mind?

well, like I mentioned earlier, wanting to transfer into e-school was something I was considering but I was not going to take any action until I had gotten some views on it. I contacted someone from the Systems department last week but they have yet to hear from them. If not major, then I would definitely like to do minor. I was considering the possibility of staying back in the summers to complete it but it definitely does not look feasible if I want to finish my undergrad in 4 years.
The change of mind was not sudden actually - I'd always wanted to be in the eschool and took physics, chem, math and bio in high school but then since I am not very strong in math, I was advised against an engineering major back in high school but then I find myself taking just as many math classes in order to be able to do well in econ, so I just felt like I would prefer to be in the eschool, although I really like econ.
I would definitely look into the option of minoring since that seems possible to me within the next 5 semesters...

I doubt there is any way to finish in four years. I would count on an additional 2 with summers, or 3 without.

Also, to anyone debating e-school versus college: it is MUCH easier to transfer out of the e-school to the college, than college to e-school. If you're considering engineering, I would apply to the e-school. If it isn't right for you, at the end of your first year you can transfer out, and you'll have your math/science basic requirements done at least.

Thanks protean, hazelorb and shoebox for all your inputs :)
