Hi, I was wondering if my passion for working on and being around cars could be a good topic for a college application essay. I have dedicated a significant amount of my time on learning the mechanical aspects of cars and researching history about them. Also, my dad and I have been restoring a 72 datsun 240z and honestly, I have completely fallen in love with working with cars and I have promised myself that I would continue in working on and being around cars until the day I die, lol I know it sounds cheezy but I’ve been head over heels for cars ever since I was 3. I’ve had many memorable experiences with cars, both good and bad, that have taught me a lot of life lessons that I feel I will use later in life. Any suggestions are appreciated!
OK, it’s a strong interest.
I think it could be a great essay. But be careful. It’s not supposed to be an essay about cars; it’s supposed to be an essay about you.
You say you’ve learned a lot of life lessons. Don’t disclose them here, but that’s your essay.
Why not start putting ideas down right now and see where it leads you?
I’ve been brainstorming about my ideas and I have yet to write it down, thank you for the advice!!
Write, write write!
It’s so much easier to edit than to write. So, whatever’s in your mind, get it down now and sort it out later!
Good luck!
Sounds interesting to me–a passionate interest that “only you” could write about. Go for it! Have you read “Hack the College Essay”? It is short, interesting, and really helped my daughter get started on her essay. With your topic and the “hacking” advice you could get a draft out this weekend. Good luck!
I will definitely look into “Hack the College Essay”, thanks for the suggestion!!
Does anyone else have any suggestions for any good books with pointers on college essays?

It seems okay (although if I’m an admissions officer, I might wonder if you are going to drop out to be one a car mechanic). Also… I think more AOs are women than men — remember that your reader may not share your passion or interest. I know I’m generalizing, and there are exceptions— but women often wonder why men are do consumed by cars — many women just consider them transportation. So you need to take your reader along. Find someone who doesn’t care about cars to read it and see what they think.
