College essay ideas: help?

Hello! I am currently brainstorming some ideas for my college essay, and I am stuck between two topics. I don’t know which one colleges would like better, as they are both very different from each other.
Topic #1) My identity as an Asian-American and how my background has inspired me to pursue Korean as my major in college and my dreams of becoming an immigration lawyer
Topic #2) My upward grade trend: Freshman year 3.43, Sophomore year 3.57, Junior year 4.36 - discussing my growth as an individual and obstacles I faced and how I overcame them (illness that kept me from going to school for 4 months)

Thank you for your help!

Neither one. Did you read the essay tips at the top of this forum? You are trying to reveal something about yourself that isn’t obvious from your app that helps admissions get to know you better and want you on campus.

If illness kept you out of school, ask your GC to note it in their recommendation or put a very concise (couple of sentences) note in Additional Info.

Thank you! Sorry, I am new to this website, so I didn’t know how this works yet- I will take a look at the tips!

No worries — just want to encourage you to find something a little more unique to write about. “Interested and interesting” is what you are going for.

I concur… Neither… The readers want to learn something new, interesting, unique and personal that is not reflected on the application. The 2 you want to write about will be written ad nauseum by others. You want to give the readers something fresh to read about.

Hi everyone. I need help, too. My academic performance has become very poor. I’d like to make things right, but I’m not good at essays. Maybe I better turn to writing services . What do you think? Or it is necessary to write an essay on your own?

I didn’t even look at the link. Absolutely write your own essay. Many schools they do this in the English class. Get help from a teacher.

@s9841210 : Both can result in effective college admissions essays depending upon how they are written.

Based on your scant outline listed in the original post in this thread, Option #1 would be good because it focuses on your intellectual curiosity & quest for knowledge; while Option #2 should be effective because it shows an example of resilience, determination & overcoming adversity.

To be blunt, one can write about black shoelaces if the writing is done properly. What do black shoelaces mean to you & why, for example.
