College Essay in a Letter

Hi

I’m thinking of writing my college application in the form of a letter to my mother. She is an alcoholic and I’m planning on writing about my struggle with it (only for a little) , then going into what I got out of it, the broadened perspective it gave me, and other stuff about being able to speak out and not be scared.

I don’t know if it’s a good idea, or if I should even write about this topic. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would not write in letter format or about your mom’s alcoholism. This is an essay with the goal of making admissions want to add you to their campus, not a therapy session. Don’t take the prompts so seriously. Think of something unique about yourself and see if you can use that.

The letter format is fine…but is not unique and has been used before. When we visited a top 20 school we were told at the info session that one of their favorite essays was in the form of a letter. I would choose a different topic.

The point behind the essay is to sell YOU as an applicant.

Regardless of format, I can’t imagine that this is the best way to do so.

Keep other people out of your essay. It needs to be about you, completely.

i would not write about my mom’s alcoholism and your struggle with that. i think this should not be a therapy session

hmm there are other better topics not this how about you write about yourself and explain how you are going to contribute to the campus?
