College Essay--writing something that's unrelated to major?

So basically I am applying to college's engineering school or engineering department. But my essay is about my interesting hobby, which is somewhat related to European History and Humanities.

I don't know if it's okay to write this hobby because it's super unrelated to engineering. And I picked this topic because I think this is the side of me that colleges should see.

Although I tried so hard to connect this hobby back to engineering, the result turns out very bad (it confuses people, including my english teacher).

Some suggests me to pick "undecided" as major, but I am applying to their engineering department!!! and most of my activities are about engineering and science.

So, what should I do?

We faced a similar issue last year with my D.

First of all, most E schools have a supplemental essay, which basically boils down to “Why I want to be an Engineer” or more specifically “Why I want to be an Engineer at <fill in=”" name="" of="" school="">". So you’ll have your chance to show why you think Engineering is just the best thing ever!!</fill>

My D’s main essay had nothing to do with Engineering or even academics, and she did fine (Cornell, Northwestern, Michigan among other admits). So, my advice, write the best essay you can, and don’t worry about tying it in.

If you want to go to engineering school, don’t apply undecided.
