College Football Discussion 09

why can’t he just finish the bowl game and then go to ND in February or sometime around that? By just leaving, he makes Cincy fans hate him. Or perhaps he’s too afraid that losing to Florida before leaving will leave bad marks for him?

Because it would be dumb to go through the end of the recruiting season with no head coach. That would be a huge mistake.

= hiring Weis, letting him stay for the Super Bowl

I was probably the only Texas fan hoping that McCoy wouldn’t win the Heisman; I want him to play with a chip on his shoulder for the Champ game.

I like Ingram but he shouldn’t have won the Heisman, he should have been 2nd or 3rd. How does the 2nd best running back get the trophy?! Gerhart should have won it. There was an SEC bias, Ingram had more TV time than Gerhart.

Gerhart had much better statistics. Ingram played against higher ranked opponents but only played against 1 top 40 run defense while Gerhart played against 5 top 40 run defenses!!! That stat is proof that Gerhart is “more outstanding”, he played against more quality run defenses and still had better numbers than Ingram.

It’s funny how Gerhart won the Doak Walker Award (award for the best running back in the nation) but Ingram wins the Heisman. That’s like having last years Sam Bradford winning the Davey O’Brien Award while Tebow wins the Heisman. Doesn’t make sense.

Gerhart’s biggest games (against Oregon and USC) were on FSN West and Ingram’s biggest games are on network TV…no surprise he gets better exposure.

I think Gerhart should have won, but I would have put Ingram over Colt McCoy and Tebow anyway. McCoy and Tebow are there because of career accomplishment, not this season.

Of course, I still think that way back in 2007, Dennis Dixon should have won over Tebow.

Didn’t Dixon miss like the last 3 or so games after he broke his leg?

He tore his ACL in like the 8th game, and he tried to come back and play in the 9th. But it was ridiculously clear that he was an amazing player who was carrying his team on his back. Oregon was the hottest team in the country including beating eventual #2 USC and had an easy remaining schedule to the national championship game, but after Dixon went down, completely fell flat and lost the rest of their regular season games, including an embarrassing shutout against UCLA.

He sprained his ACL int eh 8th game and it gave out on him in the ninth, which was against Arizona. It’s why the trashy Arizona students had the posters saying Clemens Dixon Masoli on Gameday this year. They took pride, for some perverse reason, at Oregon QBs suffering season ending injuries there.

And yes, Dixon clearly deserved the Heisman. It’s such a joke that injuries preclude selection. The whole Heisman is a joke, though; if given supreme power for a day, I’d abolish the current voting process and ensure it was awarded to players who deserved it rather than were hyped by the media ignorance.

Well, to be fair, Mark Ingram is most definitely at least the 2nd best back in the country and put up an incredible season for Alabama. Also, back in 2007, Tebow had an incredible year that was historically statistically great and also carried his team the whole season.

The top 4 made sense (Ingram, Gerhart, McCoy, and Suh) though I still think the only reason Colt McCoy was there is his career accomplishment and not what he did in 2009.

Now, Matt Barkley for Heisman 2010? (too early?) :)

nice joke :)

Ingram is coming back for next season. He has a shot at another one.

Jake Locker for 2010 Heisman. let’s go.

ah, such an amusing game. After Oregon’s first (only?) first down midway through the 3rd quarter, the Oregon fans let off a huge amount of confetti to celebrate.

Bradford too. I don’t think either will win though, since the voters seem afraid that a 2nd Heisman would be seen as an overly strong endorsement of that player’s place in history. There are way too much politics surrounding an award that should just be the best player that year.

You mean Sam Bradford? I thought he was going pro for sure.

Locker coming back is huge. He will definitely be on people’s heisman short lists.

I’m only half-joking about Barkley. Maybe no Heisman, but I fully expect a great season in 2010. He put up a pretty good season in 2009, considering he was only in high school less than 12 months ago, and had to split reps all spring and summer with Aaron Corp. Take away his two worst passing games, and he went 62% for 2078 yards.

IMO, Barkley wasn’t even the best QB in last years recruiting class.

Maybe I’m biased but I think Garrett Gilbert is a better player. I think his arm is a lot stronger than Barkley’s, and he’s pretty mobile. I think he’s gonna be better than Colt McCoy. He hasn’t played as much as Barkley but he’s got so much more potential.

I really believe that he’s capable of winning the Heisman someday. I’d compare him to a mobile Matt Ryan.

When I read “Bradford” I think “Allen Bradford”. And he better be coming back!

Physical abilities aren’t what makes a quarterback great. Sure they’re important, but a mental grasp of the game and command of the offense is crucial.

Yeah, I just assumed he would stay after missing most of he season.

He’ll drop some for not playing, but some team will bite in the 2nd/3rd round. The smart move is to cut his losses.

Both Gilbert and Barkley have the physical gifts to succeed. Both have rocket arms and can put the ball anywhere on the field.

Barkley is surprisingly mobile, moreso than any USC QB I’ve ever seen. He scrambles well to keep plays alive and has the strengthto carry the ball (QB keep on short yardage was arguably USC’s most successful play all season)

I’m not familiar with how Texas will look next year, but Barkley has a strong supporting cast coming back:
Defense: CBs Bauchem, Wright; the entire front 7
Off: WRs Ronald Johnson, Brice Butler; C O’Dowd, FB Havili, RBs McKnight, Bradford

Of course this is assuming no surprise draft entries and not including WR Damian Williams who may or may not stay.

I think if he goes to a better football program, then he might make the finalist list. I still don’t think he can be Washington’s savior.

anyone find it funny that UCLA goes bowling? 6-6 overall, 3-6 conference record.

Mark Ingram has to be in the running for the award again next year. Jacquizz Rogers also has to be in contention. Although Jake Locker may be the best quarterback in the country next year, Washington may not be good enough to allow him to win the award. Jeremiah Masoli and Terrelle Pryor will be on teams good enough to allow them to win.
