We got the U of Chicago letters yesterday. My son won a University Scholarship. Has anyone won the better "College Honor Scholarship" for class of 2014?

If anyone has (EA admits included), I haven’t seen it posted here.

I’m curious about this too. There was a post by the PSAC on another thread that said they would be released at a “later date,” but this post was maybe a month ago.
UChicagoPSAC, if you see this, could you maybe tell us if College Honor Scholarships have yet been announced? Thanks!

I got one. $10,000 is that correct? 4 years?

The College Honor Scholarship is for full tuition. The 10K scholarship is a University Scholarship.

Yes, we won the 10K per year scholarship.

The College Honor Scholarship is about $38,000 per year.

“We won the 10k…”

~No, I’m pretty sure your son won it…just saying.

haha i wouldn’t say “won”…maybe i’m just jealous lol.

I got that too! It’s definitely attracting me to University of Chicago :]

My S got it EA. Was 39 and change but has been reduced by NMS and a couple others

Can anyone who received one of these scholarships post his or her stats and indicate the scholarship?

^yes, please do!

How do they determine who gets the scholarship? Test scores and GPA only? Or do you they look at your essays as well?

And also does being an athlete increase chances of getting a scholarship? I’ve seen posts where people state “I’m not an athlete,” but I thought that these are merit based scholarships and so athlete or not, it shouldn’t matter…

My son got Dean’s scholarship. Guaranteed to receive $5000 to spend by summer of senior year on fellowship or on course. I was happy but my son though they give it to everyone. It’s nice but simply a token as it’s for one time only.

Just wondering if these scholarship are related to financial aid by any chance?

@ona3344 - These merit scholarships don’t seem to be related to financial aid. My cousin didn’t apply for FA but was offered the “Presidential” scholarship (5k for two summers). Even with a full-tuition scholarship, an eligible FA applicant would probably still receive whatever they need to cover room & board and so on.

The high value one’s are not related to financial aid in the sense that well off students are eligible. The three people I knew who had them all had at least one HYPSMC college offer, were STEM leaning on paper (people who hit graduate level science courses by their junior year), and I believe made Phi Beta Kappa (or certainly came close). All went on to ultra elite PhD or MD programs. The college is buying talent, plain and simple. It can be a good way to grab kids who show a ton of talent in pure math, for example, but would rather attend a comprehensive university vs. Cal Tech or MIT.

I got the 10,000 a year one, and I am not athletic at all. I’d say the merit scholarships are separate from the ones offered specifically for athletes.

^One clarification. UChicago athletics participates at the NCAA Division III level. No athletic scholarships are permitted at this level of intercollegiate athletics. The athletes may or may not get an admissions boost at UChicago (don’t know enough to say), but I am certain that they do not get scholarships based solely on their status as intercollegiate athletes. Of course, they may still qualify for the other merit scholarships and need based grants that other students get.

Among CCers, did anybody receive a coveted college scholarship (full tuition) ? My daughter received just university scholarship which is good but not enough to relieve my financial burden. :(
