I am applying to a couple schools ED/EA the deadline is as early as October 15th for one, and Nov 1st for the others. I am interested in an interview. How do I sign up for such an interview? Is it online? Should I email them?

Many schools will assign you an interviewer after they receive your application (may be in person or by Skype or its equivalent). Others require you to submit a request through their admissions website. Others give you an option to schedule an on-campus interview or wait for a local alumni interviewer to contact you. Each school goes about this differently, so you need to go to the school’s admissions website.

So to be clear, are all interviews after you send in applications? Or does it vary by school?

It varies by school.

My son interviewed at some schools between April and September. He has not submitted any applications yet. For most of the schools, he was able to register for the interview online, in the same spot you register for a campus tour or information session. The interview option pops up on the campus visit form only after you indicate you will be enrolling in fall of 2018. They do not allow younger students to interview.
For two of his schools, the website did not allow online registration but did provide a phone number to call to arrange an interview.
At some other colleges, the website states that they do not offer on campus interviews, and sometimes state that students will be contacted for an alumni interview, or can request one, after their application is submitted.

Varies by school, e.g. Yale will assign an alumni interview after you apply, but you can register for an on-campus interview anytime (but if you interview on campus, no alumni interview); MIT will assign you an interviewer after you finish completing your profile portion of their application, but you don’t necessarily have to have completed the rest of the app; Swarthmore requires you to request either an on-campus or local alumni interview on their website within specific deadlines and it can be before you submit your application.
