College Libraries

ours closes at midnight, 3am during finals. but we do have 24 hr study spaces on campus, so you're not totally out of luck.

That is strange. I like libaries just as much as the next person but I really wouldn't want to spend the night there just because I could :p

My sister told me that after 2am during finals all the city bums come to the library to sleep. It's probably why it's not open 24/7.

To which college are you referring? I think most college libraries only allow students to access it, and they must present their ID card, am I not correct? This would definitely solve that problem.

There was the kid at NYU recently who got a lot of publicity in major papers after he was found to be living in the library / showering in locker rooms to save the money he would have had to spend on his room. He had an LJ, don't think he updates anymore. After this became widely known, NYU did put him up in housing for the rest of the year.

as far as only open to students, I'm pretty sure our libraries are open to anyone... but you can't check anything out without an ID card, and they would probably stop people who were clearly not coming there to work from entering.

Yeah, ours requires that you show ID from 10pm-7am.

oh wow. my library even had a computer area for non students to use...to browse the internet or type things up in word or whatever... but you had to have a student ID to take anything out of the library.

so redski, you only need to show yours at night, yes? This means that others are allowed during the day?

^ Yeah, that's right. During the day, we get a lot of non-USC patrons, such as students from UCLA, Cal State, etc. along with regular people too. At night, only USC students are permitted.

I think only private schools can restrict access to their libraries. Public schools' libraries are, well, public (though they can probably still restrict circulation to college people).

Anyway, Vanderbilt's science and engineering library is open 24hr/day except on Saturdays. The other libraries have limited hours.

At my private school, library hours are set. I know they open at 8AM, not sure when they close. Access isn't restricted, but checking out books and using computers require a college ID and network account.

There is a large public library about a mile away so getting "outsiders" isn't really a problem. It's also nice if you can't find what you want at the college library.

To the OP: UCSD librares are not open 24/7 except for finals week.

NYU libraries are open 24 hours.
I've had a few nights there when I couldn't be bothered to make a commute back home at 3 in the morning :P
