My daughter is a junior and she has compiled a list of schools. Any info on these schools would be great. She will be an education major and is looking for a smaller school in the south, with a liberal feel and a good amount of Jewish students. The list is: College of Charleston, U of Richmond, Emory, Elon, Rollins, maybe Vanderbilt. Thanks

My d really liked U Richmond - she's also a possible ed major. She liked the "feel" of it. But she wasn't looking for a school in the South - she loves her winters. So it's possible that Richmond may not feel "Southern" enough for yours, if it appeals to a diehard New Englander!

Actually, she wants a taste of winter, but not to cold. We live in Florida, so she has never experienced a real winter.

I need to add U of Miami to the list, but she is negative about being in Miami.

Do you think Elon as any Jewish kids? I thought it was only 2-3%?

Have you been to the Hillel web site?

Yes. I have checked Hillel website. I don't think all the info is current. But I was concerned about Elon's numbers.

Elon's numbers are admittedly quite low. On the plus side, they just appointed their first Jewish University Chaplain.

My son is at Emory, and he loves it. but I don't think Emory has a program for education majors for students who want to become teachers.

Thanks, nice article on Elon

How important is it that there be a good amount of jewish people? Cornell has a very large percentage of jewish students and we have many many events, programs occuring throughout the year.

Out of all those schools, College of Charleston is the most southern. Everything about it is just pure southern.

Tulane and Emory are the 2 traditional "Jewish" schools in the South.
These are the schools that had lelatively large %s of Jewish students, and old Southern Jewish families sent their kids to these schools, in part to meet other Southern Jewish kids.

Nowadays she will find goups of Jewish kids at any of these schools, and goodly numbers at the state schools as well - she just needs to contact Hillel at each school, and ask lots of questions - good luck!

There is a website with the % of jewish students at each school. I think it was through the general Hillel website. Ironically enough, my daughter visited C of C and Tulane, among others, and ultimately picked Tulane. C of C- it's a nice school with an urban feel - it compact - feels like a small school. I agree that it really feels like a southern school, so depending where you are from, it may take an adjustment. Ultimately, my daughter felt that Tulane was the best fit. If my memory serves my right, I think C of C was about 7% Jewish and Tulane about 20%.
