College Marketing Ploy?

Hi, I've seen posts on mailings before, but I don't understand some of them. I'm a good, solid URM student, that did very so-so on his SAT and I am retaking in the fall. My grades are very good, but colleges wouldn't know that.
I've received many glowing letters about my scores, etc. and I understand the ones that are for diversity weekends, etc. Lately though, colleges like UPENN have been writing saying they've gotten my name from College Board's student search (I registered for SAT's, that's it) They went on about my being a strong canditate for not just their school, but other of the finest universities and colleges. My "achievements" place me in an elite group of students, blah, blah, you get the point. Do they need applications that much? Don't schools like Penn get thousands? One letter was so glowing, that my Dad joked I should take in on the interview with me. : ) I'm not interested in most of the schools, but I didn't understand the marketing when they do well without it.

You just don't get it. That's okay.

I had a LOT of recycling this year....just wish scholarships could come the same way!

Schools always want more applications. More applications lead to a lower acceptance rate, which is a decline they covet. Don't get a false sense of security from those letters.
