I am a Junior in High School and I am going to be auditioning for colleges next year to major in Musical Theatre. At the moment after a lot of research the colleges i will most likely be auditioning for is Penn State University, University of Central Florida, Florida State University, Pace University, Roosevelt University, University of Southern California, NYU Tisch, Wright State, and Kent State. I was looking at audition songs and i narrowed my up-tempo song to "Somethings Coming"- West Side Story and my ballad "Somewhere"- West Side Story.

My First question is: Do you think it is not a good choice that both of the songs I am singing are from the same musical?

Secondly: Is it a bad choice that one of my songs (Somewhere) is normal sung my a girl vocalist and i am a male?

Finally:What do you think about my choices in colleges and how do they differ from each other?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated ! Thank You

USC does not have a musical theatre major. You can audition for the minor after you are enrolled.

Are you working with someone (i.e. vocal coach/teacher) on picking rep? If not you need to. Something’s Coming is fine, Somewhere is not. Gender bending is not acceptable for college admissions and 2 songs from WSS is hardly contrasting. WSS is Golden Age, find a contemporary ballad if you can.

I would suggest you read as many posts on this forum as possible covering info for juniors and seniors - one is hidden under featured discussions p. 2. There is a lot here on choosing schools, application and song choice.

The main thing you need to do for song choice is look at the requirements for auditioning for each school. Most often you will need songs from 2 different ‘eras’, as well as ballad and one uptempo. You should also have more than 2 songs ready in case you are asked for another. You will also need numerous cuts of each song and music recorded.

All but one of your schools are pretty selective in auditions currently, as there are sooo many kids auditioning. Go to post #2 of the Big List of schools and find some in areas you like that are smaller, not as well known and regional draws, rather than national. Also, pick at least 2 that are nonaudition that you are sure you would be admitted to, that either have BA’s or lots of theater available. Otherwise, you might just be left out in the cold!

Many, many kids these days are using monologue and song coaches to audition. Look for someone in your area, or use a group you can skype with, like MTCA (music theater college auditions). The amount of $ you invest in using them will pay off greatly in the long run, as they will share with you your chances in the this very competitive endeavor, and will bring you to your best, with the opportunity of winning scholarships!

Also, check carefully to see if you have to send in preaudition tapes to any of the schools you apply for, as those will have to go out late summer, early fall.

Again, read, read, read this forum! Best of luck!!!

Dear DreDoub,
I am a father of a recently accepted 17 yr old to Pace University. THE single best piece of advice i can give to anyone looking to do MT is consider doing the ARTSBRIDGE summer program by halley Shefler. it is a intensive 2 week program in NYC. The instructors are all the major Dept Heads for MT in the country. I have no relationship with them at all but it was the BEST thing my daughter did. And Sarah had a ton of lessons and experience. Auditons are very specific and the wrong song or monologue will hurt big in the audition. They customize everything for you. Great auditionboot camp. I hope this helps.
