College names that do not quite fit the college

What colleges have names that do not quite fit the college? For example:

The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art: replace “Science” with “Engineering” to get a better matching name, since it has only three majors which are architecture, art, and engineering (no science majors)

It was established in Miami Valley. It’s like California University of Pennsylvania, which is in the city of California, in Pennsylvania.

Dartmouth College - R1 university

College of William and Mary - R2 university

I’m not putting in all of the LACs which are called “university” - too many.

I still think it fits the “do not quite fit” criterion/

Add Indiana University of Pennsylvania as another misnomer.

It was named for the Miami indian tribe which was located in the area around the time of the University’s founding 1806. Miami Florida (named after a River) wasn’t given that name until 1894. I’d say Miami of Ohio has it right.

University of the Pacific – located about 60 miles from the Pacific

Pepperdine – I would expect this school to comprise a bunch of pepper enthusiasts

UCLA – located in Westwood. But UCW just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Tufts – Should be a much hairier campus

Princeton – This school would need about 10-12 princes in residence for the name to fit.

Rice – I see no paddies…

Georgetown – Either we need to see a lot more Georges here, or the acceptance rate for those named George should be 100%.

Emory – This should be the place for Cosmetology.

Rice is short for William Marsh Rice, and it gets swampy. The William Rice marsh.

As far as UCLA, UCSD is in La Jolla, and UCSB is in Goleta.

I always thought MIT should be called MassTech in keeping with its brethren. Not as catchy.

Isn’t one of them under the chapel?

“It’s like California University of Pennsylvania, which is in the city of California, in Pennsylvania.”

Affectionately known as “Harvard on the Mon”.

University of South Carolina (USC) vs the west coast version.

Short names can be variable… for example, one might think that the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University might have a short name like Virginia Poly or some such, but it does not.

I get the idea, though UCLA is located in the municipality of the City of Los Angeles. Westwood is just an informal neighborhood name – it doesn’t exist legally. LA has dozens of these neighborhoods – Hollywood doesn’t exist either (just another neighborhood name), though West Hollywood is an real separate city that is not part of LA.Over the years I lived in Westwood, West LA, Hollywood, Palms, West Hills and Woodland Hills and was in the City of Los Angeles the whole time.

Ohhhh, I see. I thought Westwood was a suburban city in the LA metro area.

So it’s kind of like Hyde Park – a neighborhood, not actually a city itself.

Creepy…

Just don’t call it VTech(toy company) or Vah Tech like some sports announcers. The Hokies get very upset. It’s either Virginia Tech or just Tech.
