College of Chemistry pros and cons?

What do you think? Heard a lot about the pros - #1 chemistry program, tight knit community etc, but what are some of the bad things about it I should be aware of?

extremely difficult.

If you want to go to grad school after undergrad chem at Berkeley, the only place you can go is down.

what do you mean down? that it’s hard to enter graduate school after undergrad at college of chemistry?

no, just that the best graduate chem program is at berkeley, and they’re reluctant to accept their own undergraduate students since they believe students should try different environments.

oh i see. yep i’ve heard that is true also. but the undergraduate program is excellent. from its career guidance website i’ve seen alot of CoC people moving on to excellent graduate schools (though not at Berkeley itself as you’ve said).

MIT and Caltech grad schools are ranked as high as Berkeley for chem in general on US News, and there are differences by specialty, e.g. Berkeley is #1 only for the physical and theoretical subcategories. As always, #1 vs #2 or #3 ranking doesn’t necessarily make a huge difference in the environment/opportunities available at the respective schools.
