Is it safe to go for newly founded college of engineering at the University of Georgia (for MS in Engineering "Structural Engineering")? Any comments would be highly appreciated.............

The College of Engineering has been off to a phenomenal start under the administration of Dean Threadgill. It’s pretty impressive for a new program to be ranked nationally in only the first year of existence. I think this is even more true seeing as one of the world’s best engineering schools, Georgia Tech, is located some odd miles down the road. UGA’s engineering power is actually in biological and agricultural engineering. The biological engineering program was ranked 11th in the nation by US News. The College, however, has many top notch faculty and attracts some high dollar research grants - especially in biofuels and structural materials. UGA’s strong biochemistry and inorganic chemistry faculty have seemed to help attract those initial grants.

That being said, UGA engineering is by far the second best in the state. In terms of what the program will offer, that I can’t say with full confidence. I’m sure it’ll be a top program in a few years, but not Georgia Tech top. UGA engineering will directly compete with Clemson, Auburn, Michigan State, UT-Knoxville, UConn, Rutgers and similar flagship schools. Maybe by the time you graduate the College will be competing with engineering programs from Ohio State, UVA, Florida, Notre Dame, RPI and BU.

The dean candidates look great! I think UGA will be a fine pick. Many of these potential Tech transfers will change their mind once entering the program.

I hope that helps.

thanks a lot!!!
