College of Human Ecology Human Development Major

Hello, I’m currently a junior in high school. I have done enough research about the school, that I figured I want to attend Cornell University College of Human Ecology and major in Human Development. I also plan to apply Early Decision (ED) next year. I would like to get more information about the major from any current Cornell student majoring in it or alumni who has majored in it. How is it like majoring in Human Development? Is it a difficult major? How can I best prepare for admissions, particularly for the College of Human Ecology? What are the admissions standards? Would having a FIT for the school be an advantage for me? That is all that I have to ask. Thank you for taking the time to answer :).

My D was an HD major who graduated this past May. They have two “tracks” in the HD major that vary slightly dependent on whether the student is interested in med. school or not (my D was more interested in psychology). The CHE does more research that any of Cornell’s other 6 colleges. My D did a lot of research in the “infant lab”, in a study attempting to find correlations with a number of different variables based on mother / infant interaction. She liked the major & found the curriculum rigorous, but doable. As far as admissions, her ECs had nothing to do with her major, but did demonstrate outstanding leadership & excellence. She was in top 10% of her class, & SAT / ACT were in their average range. I would suggest going to an informational session, where you could learn more about the major & perhaps incorporate some of that info into your essay. Good luck!

@csdad Thank you for the insightful response! May I please ask, do you know when the CHE hosts informational sessions? Also if you don’t mind answering, what were your daughter’s ECs and SAT/ACT score? Once again, thank you for taking the time to answer my question!

Info sessions: http://www.human.cornell.edu/admissions/contact/visiting-the-college.cfm My D had a 31 ACT / 1350 SAT. She was twice a varsity sport captain, Senior Class President, numerous dance, chorus, & theatre awards, vice president of school theatre program, & catholic youth diocese award winner. Community service through church & youth swimming instruction.

I’m also applying to this major  Depending on what your interests are they have a 6 year phd law program for both law and human dev intrests. you can find a lot on their website

@Gatortristan Thank you for answering my question, I appreciate that you took the time to answer :). I am interested in taking the pre-MED route. Currently, Cornell and Brown University (PLME Program) are my two top choices, but as of now I’m conflicted about which college to choose to apply ED to. Originally, I was planning on applying to Cornell CHE via early decision, but I recently found out about Brown’s PLME Program and was allured by it. Anyway, what are you planning to do with your major (what is your track)?

I’m also interested in applying to HumEc next year but want to major in human biology, health and society (also wanting to be on the pre-med track). I’ve done quite a bit of research but if anyone has any information regarding admissions or anything it would be greatly appreciated!
