college of music...

I have a few questions about the college of music.. mostly just wondering what my chances are.

I've been in my school's chorus all 4 years as well as performing at Carnegie Hall with them, this is on top of the 3 years of chorus I had taken before hand. So I have sight-singing experience. Unfortunately, I made a mistake by not taking any theory classes.

My question is whether it's possible to get into the college of music for commercial music without any high school theory classes. Is it possible to take a few semesters of theory before applying?

Also, I was wondering if anyone knows how difficult a double major in Business and Commercial Music is or whether it's even possible.

I'm really unsure of whether I could do this given my lack of theory classes, but that's all I wanted to know. =

Hi radio,

Try posting your question over on the Music Major forum. They will be able to direct you further as they are extremely knowledgeable on everything music.
Good luck!

My son applied last year for the music composition program. During the audition they never once, wanted to see any of the scores he had written. The audition was performance based. He had taken theory, advanced theory and a music comp class. He was one of around 75 percussionist, with only 5-8 being accepted. (And, nope he didn't make it)

We have a good friend that is in the music performance program (2nd year) and loves it.

Does anyone know the enrollment count for the COM?

rudysmom,

The College of Music’s enrollment is between 1,000 and 1,100 at last count. Approximately 650-700 are undergraduate students.

am very interested to hear any experiences about applying to this fsu major. it is my understanding that students do not apply until they are sophomores? it seems competetive. I was wonderfing if there any way to apply for, or guarantee a spot when a student applies for music school and or this CMT major as a freshman. or rather do you you have to take your chances and wait and see if you qualify sophomore year?

The commercial music program is definitely a limited access program. While there might be a chance that a student who is both gifted in music and admitted to the honors program might be able to have a guaranteed pathway if milestones are met, I suspect that is a very rare event. You would have to call and discuss this with the department.

Here are some notes on requirements:A-R Editions Online Music Anthology - Florida State University College of Music. You might not have found this in your search

Here is the curriculum outline.http://music.fsu.edu/curricula/BA%20Commercial.pdf

Here is the academic map:[FSU Undergraduate Academic Program Guide](http://www.academic-guide.fsu.edu/Maps/MAPcommercialmusic.html)

blueskymom,

Just to back up sunnyflorida’s comment and links, you can initially apply as a commercial music major while filling out the supplement application for the College of Music, but those who are accepted to FSU and the College of Music are in turn “BA-Music: Commercial Music candidates,” until they complete the requirements listed under “Admission” in that first link. No one is officially a Commercial Music major until they have done so.

And even after those are completed, the head of the program music accept their application. During any given semester, there are about 25 students competing for 5-ish slots (students who auditioned as Commercial Music students, and current music students who want to get in the program). There are only about 15-20 official commercial music students in the program. All of the music programs in the College of Music are limited access, but Commercial Music is probably the most limited.

thx sunny and cf. this is just the kind of detailed info i was looking for. i very much appreciate your replies.
