again, faculty member here, I assure you, they do exist. They regularly acknowledge faculty and students who contribute to the community.
Daughter admitted OOS.
Welcome letter has no reference to any merit aid. (it mentions financial aid within two weeks after receiving your admission letter).
So does this mean no Merit aid included?
OOS too expensive without any aid … And financial aid will likely only be a little federal loan).
They don’t have merit aid short of the scholarships previously handed out.
It is VERY expensive for OOS.
No merit aid and yes it is quite expensive for OOS. We have to rethink it.
Daughter accepted OOS, very excited. Are the students on campus this Spring Semester? Do we know if they have confirmed if the freshman will definitely be on campus in the fall?
Yes, they are planning on it. I think move-in day is August 27 (give or take a day, but I think the 27th is correct).
We are here now & the kids are on campus. We checked into the admissions office to get a self-tour guidebook and parking pass. Kids were sooo nice on campus offering us help. The surrounding Colonial town has some nice shops & restaurants too.
It’s been a while since we visited, but we are wondering if it would be worth the trip to go again… All I remember about the dorms is that they didn’t have AC, but you could install a window air conditioner. I noticed that their dorms/food get abysmal rankings on niche. Are they really that bad?
Re: Food - As one kid said, ‘Im a senior & I survived’. LOL
I think the plan with less swipes & more dollars to swipe in the retail locations looks good. I did see a girl eating a veggie bowl that looked tasty from Saddler, so it can’t be all THAT bad.
What year did you go? There have been improvements over the years of course. But some prefer the charm of living in the old buildings like Barrett.
I think it was in 2017 or 2018. I really can’t remember anything remarkable. I was more referring to the ratings online about the food & the dorms. At this point we’re just trying to narrow down our list of schools that we want to visit again because it’s really splitting hairs as to the quality of education amongst what are pretty good options.
Thank you all, so helpful. I’m so looking forward to taking her to see it. I really think it’s the right fit for her. My first going to college so all information is so welcome!
D21 accepted oos and thrilled but no merit aid at all. Next to a Jefferson Scholarship (full ride) at UVA it just isn’t in the running. So, another spot freed up for this fantastic school!
Must try: Lunch at the Cheese Shop which is on Duke of Gloucester Street (aka “DOG Street”) about a block from campus. They have a famous house dressing on their delicious sandwiches. Be sure to order your sandwich “with extra house” for a little cup of extra dressing to dip. I miss that so much! Been around for decades! Don’t be put off by a line, they are fast.
I would be VERY cautious about going to the Cheese Shop now if you have not been vaccinated. We went to Williamsburg after Xmas. The last time we went to the Cheese Shop, it was SO crowded, I said no way to going there during Covid. But, you could order online and pick-up, so we thought we would do that. Walk in at our time and it was a MAD HOUSE. It was wall to wall people, jam packed. Complete chaos. I was in there sardined for 25 minutes trying to get my food. Most people were masked, but still. I didn’t have 6 inches from people let alone 6 feet. I was so paranoid I would get sick. I was lucky.
Eek, yeah don’t go inside, it’s tight! Best to order online and pickup from their outdoor patio “online order pickup area” to avoid crowded indoor spaces for sure!
That wasn’t an option when we were there. The signs and arrows for online pick-ups led us inside to the madness. We asked an employee if that was right and she said yes.
I was waitlisted Didn’t report SAT score, 4.0 weighted, interview, LOCI. Nothing too surprising. Lots of leadership EC’s. Hoping to get taken off the waitlist. Congrats to those who got in!
While y’all are making suggestions, don’t forget to tell your students to try to take at least one class in the Wren building before they graduate.
Thanks and good luck and positive vibes!
