College Prep 2011!

Hello, everyone! I’m brand new to CC; I literally registered two minutes ago. Anyway, I have everything finished on my application except for the following:
~Appalachian Mountain Region Essay-I’m stuck!!! I have no idea how to answer this question. Should I say how my state is different from other states in general, or what? I’m kind of confused.
~Women’s Leadership Essay-For my 500 word essay I wrote about a time when I was a leader, so I’m not sure what unique approach I could take on this essay.
~Academic Honors- Does this just mean honor societies, like national honor society, french honor society, etc?

Please and thank you in advance!!!

@Bakina- I would just look up colleges with your major for now on the page where QuestBridge lists all of its partner colleges and look up the state that the college is located. Because this is not the College Match Program, I wouldn’t stress too much about it; just make sure you do more research during the summer so that you can get matched when it counts.

Thanks grammargirl! i am almost finished with the application. i am on the personal essay section right now, i am hoping it won’t stress me as did short essays. by the way when do you hear about whether you are a finalist or not? i need the scholarship b4 may23! for harvard ssp

Bakina, in the past applicants have heard back in late April. May I ask why you need to know by May 23rd?

Another silly questions from me: For your transcript, what grading period do you select for full-year classes?

I only have to do the 500 word essay thingy. Which I probably won’t do until the night before it’s due… gah, I need some inspiration.

yeah i’m having trouble with these essays too…gah the word limits >_<

in my personal statement, i’m not really sure how to go about it…there’s so much i could say.

also for the three things.
i can’t really think of the third thing…
the first two were pretty easy…but i’m not sure about the third one…

ahhhh.

did u guys notice that if u write ur essays in Word (i use openoffice) then post in short essays section, u can exceed the limits? i exceeded by 26 words.

Eh, I’m not sure if that’s wise, Bakina.
And, ugh, I am pretty much done with my application but I keep going back to the personal statement and editing it!
Also, my teacher still has not written his recommendation and I am getting very anxious over it.

Quick Question:
For the work experience section, if i don’t have any, can i just leave it blank?

My son is applying even though our income is over 70K. We’ll see what happens!

My question: He’s homeschooled and getting his teacher recommender from a physics professor at a local university. What should he put for his school since they assume the recommender comes from the school of attendance??? Help, please!

@sbjdorlo
Don’t have any solution, sorry.

@pinkrocket
I left that section of mine blank as well and my application came out as completed…

…although I keep editing the essay. I really can’t make up my mind about it and, just today, I scrapped it and made a whole new one.

I think I figured it out. I went ahead and listed the professor’s address at the univ. since he’ll probably explain the situation in the letter. Thanks, though!

pinkrocket, do you not even have babysittiing ecperience? That is work if you have it. If not, yes, just leave it blank.

My school decided to move spring break 3 week earlier this year, so it’s impossible to communicate with my recommender and my guidance counselor.
I only have the essays to finish, but am having major writer’s block. I cannot get my sentences to flow in the way I want them to! How is the 500 word limit treating everybody?

Does anyone know when the results for the scholarship are typically released?

This is really the first thing I’ve ever written with word limits and it’s driving me nuts. 100 words for the short answers? How are you supposed to explain a passion in 100 words? Urgh.

For “extenuating circumstances” affecting one’s income, can one include expenses the family, or a member thereof, brings upon itself or himself? I ask this with respect to gambling, a vice that has taken away from my family’s income (although sans gambling we are still beneath the “$60,000” threshold, I feel it would be worth mentioning). What says the CC community?

…have any of you guys not started the essays yet?.. just me? yeah, that’s what I thought .___.

Parent of a finalist here.
@ Somestudent2, do mention anything that affects your financial condition. I’m sure other candidates have explained how addictions have impacted their families, and so should you.

@supergrover, last year at this time my son was not convinced that Questbridge was worth his time and effort. He put off completing the application and wrote his final essay at 9pm the night it was due. It wasn’t until we were sitting at the Questbridge College Prep Conference at Yale that he turned to me and said, “Hey, this will be a big help, won’t it?”
He spent a good deal more time on his applications in the Fall, and became a Finalist.
He now has a likely letter from one Ivy, and we’re waiting on three others this week, all of which we applied to for free, and most of which we wouldn’t have considered without Questbridge. So do your best - it is a big help.

@supergrover: i just started them -____- thank goodness i have a four day weekend to finish everything.

@scoutsmom: i had pretty much forgotten about the whole thing until i read your post. thanks for sharing that ! it actually motivated me :)

@supergrover911 i drafted my essay’s, but i haven’t really fleshed them. I have to do that this weekend.
