Aside from personal college fit, which would you say is more important; A high overall rank, or a high program rank, such as engineering. For example, Harvard and UC Berkeley. Harvard has a higher national ranking, while Berkeley has a better engineering rank. Which is more important if you could pick between the two?

BTW, I am a junior who is working on a primary list of colleges to visit this upcoming year and I just want some help to narrow down the options. Thanks,

I’d choose program rank considering the program is essentially the career path that you hope to take. Often, however, top colleges also have top programs… so yeah. ._.

Thanks! But like in terms of getting a job after college, will the better overall rank school have better access to jobs, or is it the reverse. Also, does the name factor on the resume make up for the difference if it is the reverse?

As far as your first question goes, I guess it depends on what kind of job you’re trying to get. For finance related programs, enrollment in those of Wharton, Stern, and Ross are typical in allowing students to find internships and jobs at top firms relatively more easily.

As far as your second question, I’m not sure. I would guess that it also depends, but there has to be a certain fit as well (as in, just because you went to Harvard for Philosophy or something doesn’t mean you’ll get a job at a biopharm company). I’m probably not the guy to ask, though… :/
