I was wondering, is it better to have a teacher who attended the college I am applying to write me a recommendation?

It may be beneficial, yes. Some colleges have alumni interview prospective students so yeah, it would probably work towards your favour.

Thank you, any other insight?

It can be especially helpful to choose an alum to write your teacher rec if he or she is willing to write a "customized" reference for that particular college and can specifically include why it's a great match for you or how you would contribute to campus life (e.g., "[College name] has a great student newspaper. I used to read it faithfully when I was an undergrad, and IWorshipJPMorgan is one of the top contributors to our outstanding high school paper ... ")

If you ask a teacher/alum to write on your behalf, you should present your teacher with a cover note that includes some of the reasons why you chose his or her alma mater in the first place. You might even ask the teacher why he or she thinks the school is a good fit for you. By discussing this first, the teacher will have some extra ammunition for the reference.
