I know that everyone says quality not quantity but I am just so stuck with cutting down my recommendations! see, I know the norm is one from your guidance counselor and 2 from teachers and one from an "extracurricular" activity but is it okay to have more? and, would it hurt me if i didnt use my english teacher from sophmore year and senior year (one in the same) becuase I dont believe he's too fond of me? Also, if I am steering towards foreign languages, do you thing I could have 2 language teachers write my recs? and also, can one of my teacher recommendations be from the department chair (foreign languages dept chair) b/c even though shes never had me in class, shes helped me with all my language classes and classes outside of school. Would her rec still count as a teacher rec? Thanks so much!

the norm is not to have gc, 2 teachers and an extra curricular, the norm is to have the gc and two teachers. any more than gc 2 teachers and a supplement is definitely over doing it because chances are that they will just be repeating the same information, which will be an annoyance for adcoms. Depending on where you apply, you can't get a language teacher to write a rec (I know this is the case for UChicago and another top school which I can't recall). I would recommend that you not use two teachers in the same subject, especially bc one of them hasn't even taught you. Generally colleges specify that your main recs should come from teachers that have taught you in academic classes, from 11 or 12th grade. However, the fact that the french department chair has taught you, just not in school, might qualify him/her for that category. I guess it's up to you whether or not you decide to follow the guidelines. :)

thank you!
